Turbo'd d17a1. Want to install crower cam. Worth it?
Hey all
I have a 2001 manual LX w/ D17a1.
I am looking into crower cam stage 1 now, but am unsure if anyone has attempted, or if it is even worth it. Of course, I would have to follow the Vtec head swap found on this forum, so that's an additional expense.
Would you guys go for it? How much of a HP increase would I be looking at? Right now I'm using the TSI piggyback, so if I don't do this cam, I would go for Kpro and retune instead.

I have heard that once the engine gets itself adjusted to the cam, it is a great piece. I have a 96 LX, and I plan on doing an EX headswap and put in a crower cam within the next month or so.
I am not sure what the exact horsepower increase is, but from what I have heard, it is noticeable. Especially at higher rpm's when the Vtec kicks in.

With a turbo it would be worth it, but you might as well do the stage 2 if your going with a head swap. You will have to change out the valve springs and retainers but you would get better performance.
Gude Performance makes a cam for the d17a1. Well they re-grind an old cam to whatever specs meet your needs. Price was similar to a Crower cam, but idk what kind of quality they are.
K-Pro would be best if you do or don't go with a cam. It is going to a allow the most tuning out of the engine and will give you plenty of room to expand.

If you want a crower cam, you're gonna need to do an -a2 head swap

Thanks for the replies. I'm scoping ebay and craiglist, and if I find a Vtec head cheap enough, I might bite. Just for a fun project if anything

I might have an incomplete vtec head for sale. I mean, I have one laying around, but I still need to figure out what I'm gonna do
It would basically be *just* the head; no valves, rocker assemblies, etc. OEM cam if you want it, though
