Newbie With question

Alright I did look through about 8 pages and can't find what my car is doing exactly. Ok when my car idles it won't put out heat when you give it gas it blows heat. It sounds like a belt to me but not sure. I already changed the thermostat cap. Same problem. Kind of defeats the remote start in winter. Ok my car is a 03 Honda Civic 1.7. 2 Door. And my window on the drivers side stops about quarter of the way down for no reason anyone have that problem? I just got the car and am kind of wondering has plenty of power not missing or anything just need some heat. Thanks for your time all. Apprciate it.

Re: Newbie With question

Have you checked your radiator and reserve tank fluid level? Are they both at the correct levels? Was your radiator full when you replaced your radiator cap?

I didn't want to go right in to it without getting more information. I was just waiting for "the reserve tanks full to the top and there's coolant all over my engine" statement. I know the blowing cold air is another symptom, but he could have air in the system from doing something else he's not telling us. Not likely, but possible.

You can tell him if you'd like.

Re: Newbie With question

But wouldn't there be other symptoms?
Normal symptoms are:

No heater or weak heater output, (varies with level of coolant in the radiator)
runs hot/overheating (worse as more coolant is pushed out of the radiator)
radiator appears low, while the reservoir appears overflowed.

That's about it, until the symptoms are ignored for too long.

They don't do most of the things that *some people* think blown head gaskets should do.
That's probably why head gaskets are the most common thing people misdiagnose on these.

Oh yeah, congratulations on your purchase of a used car.
Now you know why it was for sale.

Re: Newbie With question

Coolant won't go all over the engine. It only comes out of the reservoir cap if the reservoir overflows. If it started off empty, then it isn't likely to overflow.

To prove a head gasket failed on these: I fill the radiator to the top, then pressurize each cylinder with 170 PSI of air pressure from the shop air lines, and watch what happens to the coolant in the radiator. When the level rises, I found the breach.

Here's the thread that Matt made when his went. Read what he saw in his first post: https://www.civicforums.com/forums/3...ppened-me.html

Sorry man. I felt the same you do now. Fortunately for me, I was able to do the work myself with some advice from ezone.

If you can't get shop air in to the cylinders to test it like ezone can, you can use the item pictured below to look for bubbles coming through the radiator.

Name: IMG_2126.jpg
Views: 29
Size: 82.1 KB

Fill and bleed the system as best you can before doing the below.

Fill the funnel with a little coolant and watch for a stream of bubbles coming up through the funnel as the engines running. Manually rev it in the engine bay and see if the bubble activity increases. If you see an increase, one or more of you cylinders is pushing compressed air in to the coolant system.

Good luck with whatever happens. Better to knock it out now before it overheats and warps your head.

Re: Newbie With question

I was sure that someone made a video of putting the overflow hose into a container and watching the bubbles come up from it.

Couldn't find the thread.

Re: Newbie With question

ok I did a pressure test on the coolant system passed great. We did the funnel thing and filled it it worked great that day next day same thing. So today I ordered Head Gasket set as well as a waterpump since I will be right there anyway. Talk about **** me off good thing my buddy likes working on cars for hours on end. I don't know though. So once I get this done What next? Exhaust? Intake? What are the things to do?

Sorry. I'm a little confused at what you're saying here. Did the funnel thing work and prove the HG was bad or did nothing fail and you're doing the HG job anyways?
