Clutch Recommendations
Clutch Recommendations
I've read through a lot of posts, but many of them are years old so I'm not sure if the info. is still relevant or true. I am changing my clutch, because it needs to be changed, and I've gotten to the point where I have removed the old pp/clutch/flywheel OEM Honda is running around 200 bucks, and for a bit more I wouldn't mind getting something nice. Not for the sake of being able to handle more power or clamp harder (my car is near stock as far as power is concerned). I just want a nice, full faced, organic disc with slightly firmer pedal feel. I am also putting in a new OEM slave and techna fit SS clutch fluid line at the same time, so I'm hoping for a nice before/after feel.
I narrowed it down to the brands I"m willing to spend money on, and then narrowed it down to applicable kits. This is what I came up with:
ACT HC5-SPSS
Clutch Masters FX100
Exedy Stage I Organic
Competition Clutch Stage 1.5
Centerforce II
CenterForce and CC are in the low 200's, Exedy and CM mid 200's, and ACT is 300 plus. All in all about a 100 dollar spread. I have some pros n cons for them but I would like some unbiased opinions on a good DD clutch. I am aggressive with the clutch in that I ride it a lot, dump it hard occasionally, and I spend a GOOD amount of time in bumper to bumper Houston traffic.
I will most likely buy the flywheel from the same brand of clutch. No particular reason, I just like to match/mate things that way. Any recent experience with any of those 5 entry level clutches?
I trust Exedy and ACT. I've heard mixed things about CM and CC, and I haven't heard jack about CenterForce except that they've been around for a long time in the domestic scene. Thanks for any insights.
EDIT: I kicked Centerforce off because I'm not willing to spend money on their products right now, and I kicked out ACT because although it's quality, I can't justify the 100 dollar increase over just a plain OEM clutch. If I'm replacing it, I'll spend a bit more to get something nice, but I'm not looking to spend a lot more to get something I don't absolutely need.
That said, it's down to:
Clutchmasters FX100
Exedy Stage 1
Competition Clutch Stage 1.5
With more research I've found them to be within 12 bucks of each other. So it really is based on preference and reviews.

Re: Clutch Recommendations
I know you already bought it, but just a quick question, do you have any reason you need anything more than an OEM replacement? I was turbo'd for a little while and hardly found the need for a stage 1 clutch
The reason I ask is because Exedy makes an OEM replacement you can get for ~$100. Tack on an extra $226 for a lightweight flywheel from Exedy, throw in a discount code, coulda got the bundle for $308 shipped.

Re: Clutch Recommendations
Yeah the kit was 475+40 tax, with free 2 day shipping. I shopped around at the sponsors, THM ended up being the next cheapest.. but then I remembered that exedy is a common, maybe more weell known brand and prob available on amazon, where as other brands I was looking at weren't. Amazon had it, they charged sales tax, but as a prime member I get 2 day shipping for free so it came out cheaper. Dezod was 595, BEFORE tax n shipping.
Anyways, you're prob right, I should've gotten the OEM replacement, because the PP sent with the stage one kit does NOT fit either the stock or exedy flywheel (dowel pin holes don't match with dowels I pressed in to fly wheel). N the only reason I got the stage 1 was for longevity and I like the slightly firmer pedal feel without knee destroying clamping force. I know the clutch in both kits are organic, but I was told (not by a sales person haha) that the stage 1 organic is a more premium material and will last longer than the OEM clutch replacement.
Anyways, the flywheel is in, i did the rear main seal while I was back there, I'm just waiting for monday so I can call exedy and ask them what the deal is with this pressure plate.

Re: Clutch Recommendations
This came in handy... I am in need of a new clutch soon. ClubRSX is running a special on the OE Exedy clutch but I think it's still around 150. Is there an alternate site that would be better? coupon code?
