Trans Slip/Flare?
Trans Slip/Flare?
I was recently given an 01 civic ex sedan, with auto trans. So far have been pretty happy with it (first honda i've owned) but lately have noticed a slip (or what i've read around here to be flare). I took a video of this, although it's usually worse when the car is colder. I am reading that because it's an 01, that it's prone to premature secondary clutch pack failure. Sometimes this "flare" is 1-200rpms, but i've seen it go up to 500 rpms. It seems if I accelerate a little more aggressively this doesn't occur at all! It only occurs under light/slight load.
The car has 142k on it, and was driven very responsibly and carefully all 142k mi, and has had all of its trans and oil flushes on time, typically done at a honda dealership. It was babied by my great great uncle, and then my grandfather.
I guess my question is based on what you've seen in the video, how bad is it? Given it's service history, and the admitted problems with that trans, is there any chance in hell i'd ever get it replaced or rebuilt out of warranty?
I've never cracked a trans open, but would be willing to try to save $1600 :P
Also how tough would a manual swap be? I would really rather do that than invest any money in an autotragic honestly...
any input appreciated

Re: Trans Slip/Flare?
Yes, there are a small amount of early 7th gen transmissions that have had #2 clutch pack problems. Search for johndeerbones (I think it was him) as he has a teardown/analysis thread on it.
Couldn't watch the video. Is it a flare only when the engine is cold? Does it go away when the engine warms up? I think gearbox is on 50k+ miles from once his started to cold flare, but he suspects failure is inevitable. Search it up.
Don't know your mechanical aptitude, but guessing if you never opened a transmission or know anything about them, that probably isn't an option. I've never done one, but a manual swap seems to be a pretty involved operation as well.
I dunno, just do a drain and fill every XX,000 miles, baby it until the trans warms up and be done with it.
