New Clutch, bad chattering
New Clutch, bad chattering
2004 Civic with ONLY 66k!
So I took the hit and got a new clutch as the old one was all messed up (bite point at the top of the pedal travel, chattering, etc.) Replaced it with an OEM Exedy clutch assembly for my exact year make and model (heard they were pretty reputable). Also had the flywheel resurfaced. I have about 40 miles on the new clutch, and man it chatters like a BITCH. Usually in first gear but slightly noticeable in second. It even chatters when I'm downshifting from 3rd to 2nd - as I'm letting the clutch out, you can feel the car vibrating until the clutch is fully out and into second gear. I know there is a break-in period for clutches, but something is telling me this isn't a symptom of that (or am I wrong?). Anyone with ideas or experience with Exedy clutches? I can smell the clutch after I park the car, but only if I put my face by the grille. The clutch pedal is very soft as well. MUCH softer than the old clutch, but the mechanic did grease much of the pivot points in the fork and slave as it used to squeak prior to the change.

Re: New Clutch, bad chattering
It's a pressure plate that came with the Exedy kit. I was thinking about the pressure plate as a possible culprit, but was unsure. The clutch is VERY easy to depress compared to the outgoing (stock) one. Could this indicate that the pressure plate is not strong enough?
