evap leak

I own a 93 civic 1.6 and I went to get smogged and I failed because of an evap somewhere. Now I have no engine codes. But I have noticed a drop in mileage. Would an evaporate leak hurt my mileage?

Not by much, but it could. How much gasoline can evaporate out of your tank? Do you ever smell gas when walking around your car? In the garage? Big clue there if you do.

Find out what test was done to determine this was leaking, since the OBD1 cars do not monitor this area. I'm guessing all they would test is the gas cap, but you need to find out for sure. (We don't have emissions testing where I live.)

Or get a second opinion from a trusted mechanic.

Around here (rust belt), those rust out the gas tank around the rear corner on the drivers side, at the seam. Maybe this is your problem?

Is that what failed then, or were there more tests?

I failed across the board but one was the evap.. They put their own cap on it with a hose n checked it that way. All my other tests were off the charts, way I've the max especially the no ppo.. 1920 was mine with a mex of 750 n they suggested a new cat of which I got but I still need to fix the evap leak

Re: evap leak

I can't really help you much with that from here, it's not like I can tell you to change a part and it will be all better.
There is a lot of stuff to check in the EVAP system, the individual components AND all of the pipes tubes and hoses. And the tank itself, and the parts stuck in the top of the tank........
Time for a service manual and some work.

If you can actually smell gas fumes, that may help lead you in a direction.
