Timing Belt Noise?
Timing Belt Noise?
I have greatly appreciated this forum, it has been a huge help to me in the past and hope it will be again today!
A friend, who is pretty skilled mechanically, helped me do the 100,000 mile maintenance on my 2005 Civic. We replaced the timing belt, crank seal, cam seal, water pump, auto tensioner, etc. Once we got everything put back together and ran the car I realized it was making a loud whining noise every time I hit the accelerator. The only time I can't hear it is if I let the engine slow down and idle or when the road/tire noise gets to be too loud.
The noise sounds like it's coming from the timing belt area and is driving me nuts. I'm not sure how to go about getting rid of it.
Anyone have similar problems in the past and have suggestions?

Re: Timing Belt Noise?
We used quality parts and it still makes the noise with the alternator and power steering belts taken off...any other thoughts? I have everything taken apart but can't figure out what's causing the noise. Anyone know the torque specs for the tensioner bolt?

It sounds to me like the timing belt is too tight?

Re: Timing Belt Noise?
Thanks! I believe that you were right. I tightened the auto-tensioner bolt to 33 foot pounds, which I found as the spec on a DIY timing belt forum from this site but it made a lot of noise. I backed it down to between 15 and 20 foot pounds and it sounds a lot better.

This response is extremely delayed, but thanks to all those who helped me figure out the timing belt noise last summer. The kit I bought was missing a new auto tensioner spring and the old one got bent. The belt was waaaaaay too tight and I learned backing it down to 15-20 foot pounds (when it calls for 33) was not a good idea. We replaced the spring and it runs great.
Just FYI for anyone that runs across this thread with a similar problem...
