Bad Clutch or Bad Synchros?
Bad Clutch or Bad Synchros?
Sorry if this has been explored in another thread, I searched and couldnt find anything.
Ive had my 01 LX 5SP for almost two years now, and lately I've noticed something funny with my clutch and tranny. First gear, if i'm stopped sometimes is hard to get into, and it'll grind if I force it. This to me screams synchros.
However, I started feeling what felt like clutch slippage, so I did the telltale 5th gear teset (putting it in fifth at a low speed and seeing if it slips) and when I did that, it didn't really slip, it was just more of a rough jerking, not really slipping. My foot would be completely off the clutch and every 15 or 30 seconds it would feel like I put the clutch in and then immediately let it back out.
With all of this in mind, I started hearing the bad throw out bearing whirr a few months back and didnt have the money to drop my whole tranny out for a $3 bearing. Could this be atrributed?

Re: Bad Clutch or Bad Synchros?
I would say synchros, if grinding were an issue in 2nd or 3rd gears. First gear problems usually can be attributed to hydraulics (air in the system, slave going out, etc). Does it grind going into reverse or other gears?
Re: Bad Clutch or Bad Synchros?
I was told you can test the synchros by shifting the car straight into reverse from neutral after its been sitting. It shouldn't grind into reverse. I had an old Accord tht did so I would have to shift it into first before going into reverse so it wouldn't grind. Also I think the slip test is suppose to be done in third gear. If its slipping in fifth then it's really bad.
Re: Bad Clutch or Bad Synchros?
Thanks guys, I'm thinking it might be synchros.
As far as reverse, it will grind if the car is rolling. For example, my driveway is at a slight incline, and when i take the ebrake off I will start to slightly roll, literally maybe 1 or 2 mph, and it will grind. Not sure. Taking it to my mechanic because obviously this is beyond my reach.
