shift **** is not working properly

Hi,

I have Honda civic 2002 with automatic transmission. I had some problem with the shift ****, I do not need to push on break or the button on shift **** to switch from parking to rear, from neutral to rear and back. What I am afraid of is that I would accidentally push the shift **** from D to rear and kill my transmission. One time it happened but I was luckily it went only to neutral. I would assume I need to push on break before switching to rear gear.

When I shift from D3 to 2 gear I need to push button on the shift **** to do it.

It was like this since I bought it 2 years ago. Does anybody has a clue how I can fix it?

Re: shift **** is not working properly

Sounds like you have a problem within the shifter housing. Someone might have done something else to get around the original problem too.

You should only need to push the brake pedal and push the button both to move the shift lever out of Park.

You do NOT need to push the brake to move the lever out of N or past N. This is not a Ford.

If you can just grab the lever and pull it out of Park without your foot on the brake and without pushing the button, then there is a problem.

You should need to push the button at the same time, to release the lever from Park. If you don't have to push that button, there is a problem.

Also, you are not supposed to be able to remove the key from the ignition unless the lever is in Park. If you can remove the key from the ignition switch while the lever is in N or D, then there is a problem.

If the lever will move from N to R without pushing the button, there is a problem.

Once the lever is out of the Park position, you can pull the lever to D3 without using the button.
You should need to push the button to move the lever farther than D3 (to 2 or 1).
You do NOT need to push the button to move the lever forward again. The lever should stop at N.

You should need to push the button to move the lever forward past N.
