Manual Transmission stick shifter problem
Manual Transmission stick shifter problem
Recently the shifter of my manual 2001 Honda Civic EX has become stiffer and the shift doesn't feel definite when I change from 1st gear to 2nd gear and also when I'm shifting to 5th gear. Sometimes the shift doesn't work and I have to go into neutral and try again. What can this be? Is something going wrong with any linkage? And if so, is this common with Honda manual shifters? About how expensive would it be to correct it? I would be grateful for any insight. Thank you.Sincerely,

Re: Manual Transmission stick shifter problem
2 things come to mind:
I seem to remember those having a problem with the pivot, under the shifter lever.
The pivot is like a large plastic ball that the shifter is mounted in, and it splits in half. When it does, it tries to expand when you yank on the shifter. As it expands, it binds and makes it tough to move the lever back and forth.
You would have to buy the whole shifter housing to get it. Almost $50 at Majestic.

The other thing would be where the cables attach to the trans, the round ends could be corroded and seized to the posts of the shift levers. I haven't seen this on the Civics yet though, but I see it on other Hondas sort of often.
For nearly 10x the price of the replacement shift housing, you could get this cool looking thing...
