1995 DX Sedan terrible gas mileage
1995 DX Sedan terrible gas mileage
I just bought a 1995 Civic DX Sedan (automatic) to use as a commuter car for school instead of my F150 to save on gas. Well after driving it for the last 3 days I'm down to a half tank of gas with only 65 miles on the tank so far. The car seems to be running just fine and there no noticeable problems or codes being thrown. The car is stock and has 162k miles on it. There are larger 17" wheels on it with 205/40 tires but that only produces a 3.5% speedometer error compared to the stock wheels so that alone shouldn't be throwing the mileage readings off by a significant amount.
I am going to be giving the car a tune up here pretty soon by changing the oil and other fluids along with the PCV valve, valve adjustment, spark plugs, fuel & air filter and anything else that needs to be done. Even so, I don't think that the car should be getting roughly 16mpg as it is anyways. Is there something I might be forgetting that could be causing this poor fuel economy? I drive the car very conservatively so the driving isn't the issue.

Re: 1995 DX Sedan terrible gas mileage
I was new to the issues of the 95 models myself till maybe a week ago, since then have done the following. Fuel filter, dizzy coil replacement, coolant flush, oil change, throttle body clean to the max, o2 sensor, and new plugs. Oh and adjusted the timing. (owner before me kept it rust free but was clearly mechanically stupid)
Besides the oil change and coil replacement, it all made my gas mileage rise a great deal. The tune up would probably help some, but pay close attention to the plugs, dizzy, etc. I was off a hair with timing and saw an mpg loss, my coolant had air in it and the idle was wacky at times so it sometimes had a slight influence. The throttle body cleaning though seemed to do the most good. the IAVC unit on these things gets dirty as hell and can lead to problems too, id get some cleaner plus a tooth brush and cloth and get that thing squeaky clean. Im sure there are more with input but thats been my experience in the past week. I have a stock engine with 195k and its purring now minus the coolant bubbles i had to remove today.
