2003 Civic LX-gas fumes inside the car
We just recently inherited the in-law's 2003. We've learned that the vehicle had been lease and in two accidents (2003-right rear side collision & 2005-front end collision) before the in-laws purchased it from a dealer who had purchased it at auction. The car has very low mileage (51,000) and probably needs 4 new tires but it seems to have this one nagging problem that stumps us. It appears that when we accelerate the engine kicks back an odor much like gasoline into the cabin of the vehicle. Our mechanic has checked out the engine but everything seems to be in fine working order. The mechanic has even changed the cabin filters twice in the last year or two. The odor is more prevalent when running the AC rather than the heat but it does come through regardless. So far, the odor hasn't been strong enough to make anyone sick but it is very annoying to drive with this constant, unpleasant, scent.
Has anyone had similar problems and if so, were you able to get to the root of the issue? Would love some advice to share with the mechanic.
