Why would it be a head gasket? Is it because you think oil is in the coolant?
Even if there was, as long as the pump is pumping fluid thru the engine and radiator and the fan kicks on at the right time, cooling an idle engine shouldn't be a problem.

You press on the gas and the engine cools down vs idle??

I'm a confused wanna-be mechanic

Re: civic over heats please help

^ What happens issss the head gasket being blown pushes exhaust gases through the gasket into the cooling system and displaces antifreeze. Which over time causes your car to overheat. Oil in the coolant is another clear sign this is happening.
