Lightbulb Retro Fit advice

So me and Dark Souljur plan on retro fitting our head lights soon with Morimoto Minis. My head lights are so fogged up, I really need to get a new pair. Visibility is crap. Of course we want to take the HID route. So our question is: What are all the materials that we are going to need? We know what we need for the retrofit, but when it comes to HID's... We don't know much.
So if anyone could let us know what materials we'd need exactly for the HID's. Whats the best and where can we get them for a good price. We're probably looking at 6 or 8k.

List of Material so far:

Bi-xenon: Morimoto Mini (H1) $120 (possible different shrouds):

http://www.theretrofitsource.com/product_info.php?products_id=221&osCsid=cnbi3fmgs2 5jegfinthfs9bu9l9h6v8p

Blacked out OEM style headlights $118 (Buy it now, after shipping):

Re: Retro Fit advice

I have no time to give a good response, but don't waste your money buying those headlights off ebay. Since you'll have the headlights removed and opened already for the retrofit anyway, just black them out yourselves.

See that's what I wanted to do, by my head lights are in such bad condition it's not even worth it. They're so dirty and the plastic is so faded. The amber isn't even amber anymore it's basically white. Dark could probably black his lights out since his are still in good condition, but i think he was saying something about keeping a pair of unmodified ones just in case.

Re: Retro Fit advice

Ah, I understand why you want a new set now. Makes sense. Since you're not gonna be using the reflector part, and gonna re-seal them anyways, I'd say go for it.

If you buy the morimoto mini kit, I think that's all you'd need. It comes with the projectors, ballasts, bulbs, shrouds, and relay harness

http://www.theretrofitsource.com/pro...0l446449g25kob

So, here's your parts list:
-New headlights since you want em, and I don't blame you
-The morimoto kit for (at least) $270
-A roll of 3M windoweld would be the best way to seal 'em back up

So this is gonna cost me a tad more then I thought it would haha. That's fine, i'll have fun with it Which relay harness will I need?

Do you guys have experiences with different shrouds? The ones the minis come with are a little small for my liking.. I was thinking the E46 shrouds cuz they fill a lot more space. I saw someone else on the forum did it and it didn't look too bad.

those aftermarket headlights are fine. since ur current headlights are fogged, you might as well get new ones.

as for mm projectors, they are decent. i would get no higher than 6k. it defeats the purpose of having a retrofit.

as for shroud, i have E46r. looks best imo.

Re: Retro Fit advice

Lol, yes now i remember! It was your thread that I saw it done on It looks really nice! Just wondering how the chrome shrouds would look in a black housing (it looks like the reflectors are smoked)...

I noticed on TRS that they have a "value" selection on shrouds. Basically it's shrouds with imperfections. Maybe I should get one of the imperfect ones and spray them black? Or do you guys think the chrome would look nice?

One more thing, Do i need the mm kit? What if i just got the projectors and a ddm tuning HID kid for $40

Re: Retro Fit advice

BUMP? We want to order these asap guys but a couple small questions still remain.

Like he said above we were wondering if you have to get the kit from there ... or could we just order the projectors and shrouds for $120 and then spring for a DDM hid kit?

And since we're on the topic i might aswell ask a stupid question ... but what does wiring harness do? I kno what a ballast is but not a wiring harness.

And lastly, should the ballast be 35w or 55w?

Thanks in advance!

yes. buy projector/shrouds from the retrosource.

buy hid kit from DDM. but the thing is, i dont know if DDM hid kits are still around.

its never a stupid question unless ur user name starts with car and ends with noobie.

anywhoo, you need a wiring harness because ur stock headlights wires are very very thin (like 22awg...higher the awg, the thinner the wire)

the wiring harness uses 12-16awg wire, which allows more power/electricity to flow through. (where the stock wires wont allow as much electricity to go through)

so in a sense, the wiring harness acts as a big bridge for electricity from the battery, straight to the ballast. and the stock headlight wiring acts as an on/off switch for that big bridge.

when you initially turn a ballast on, it draws a HUGE amount of power (sometimes much more than what the stock harness can handle), so thats why you need a wiring harness.

lol :P

Thanks for the reply, me and him have been waiting since yesterday for one and plus rep for explaining things to me.

Now that i know what we need i can only think of one more question (unless shift-e wants to jump in).

http://www.ddmtuning.com/Products/DD...ast-35W-or-55W

Thats the kit i was looking at.

http://www.theretrofitsource.com/pro...h2d6jau27j686l

And that the full morimoto mini kit i was looking at.

On TRS under wiring harness it lets you choose what size you want. Since the kit we're getting it the H1 morimoto's, does that mean we need the H1 wiring harness? I don't know what the difference in between the sizes :P And if we order from DDM the kit doesn't come with a wiring harness unless you pay $12.50 for a dual in - dual out HID harness. Why does TRS have different harness relay's while DDM only says dual in, dual out?

Re: Retro Fit advice

buy JUST the morimito projectors + the "imperfect" shroud. they're all like 99% perfect with maybe one small scratch. id get them. u wont notice it.

http://www.theretrofitsource.com/pro...roducts_id=206

and buy the ballast form ddm

Re: Retro Fit advice

Yeah but where am i getting a wiring harness from? Like i asked, TRS has a bunch of different relay options while DDM only says "dual in, dual out". So do i include the additional $12.50 for an "HID harness" from DDM or not?

You can close this thread now if you want :P

We bought a DDM tuning kit (6000k) and the morimoto mini's. We'll most likely make a thread when they come in and post pics of installation

Re: Retro Fit advice

dont buy ur harness from the retrofit souce. i bought one of their relays (i was lazy and didnt build my own that time) and the wireing were al 16-18awg and completely took a **** on me.

i would expect similar quality from DDM hid relay since they are all made in china, but i jsut have mad expierence with ddm relays.

buy some nice thick 12awg wire (proper size), a relay, and some female quick disconnectors and clamp em together accordingly. its pretty easy. much easier than a retrofit. lol
