How long does the average clutch last in an 8th gen Civic LX?

Just curious as to my old 98 DX original clutch was still good when I sold it with 142,000 miles

My neighbors 2000 DX has 180,000 on the original...

Do these newer 2006-2010 clutches last as long? (there has to be some high miles drivers here)

My '07 has 50k so far

Clutch life depends on the driver. I've seen them go @ 100 miles and I've seen them last past 212k miles.

Assuming the driver doesn't abuse the pedal/clutch, will the 2006-2010 clutch last as long as other gens?

I'm talking about clutches in general. My friend has a Saturn from the mid 90s with over 200k miles on the original clutch. If you don't ride it, slip the ever living **** out of it or severely mismatch your rev-matched downshifts, it should last a while.

Different makes/models are not all going to be the same...That is why I'm only asking about the 8th gen LX Civics...whereas the SI's are going to be different

I'm just looking for 8th Gen owners that have racked up high miles on their original clutch

Yes, all clutches are going to be different
Including people with the same exact car

So there is no reliable data on how long your clutch will last
It really mostly depends on what your driving style is

Just dont abuse or ride your clutch, and replace it when it needs replacinh

Riding the clutch refers to having it partially engaged correct?

Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but is downshifting and using the engine compression to brake all the time going to hurt or damage my engine in any way? Does doing this to extend brake pad life make any sense? Or should I quite over thinking this and just use my breaks to slow down?

Riding the clutch involves resting your food on the clutch as you drive, not necessarily partially engaged

It really depends on your preferred driving style. Me, I tend to not down shift.
I typically just throw it into neutral, and use the brakes, and when if im turning, i throw it into the correct gear as I enter the turn.

My driving theory is:
Brake pads are much easier/cheaper to change than the clutch (Maybe not in the long run, if you plan to keep the car for 20 years or something)

& They say you run out your pads more...but that also depends on your driving style as well
If i see a redlight a block away, i'll throw it into neutral probably 500-600 feet away and roll to the light.
Sure the people behind me will rage, but i'd be less demanding on my brakes too.

I tend to rev match my downshifts. If I'm approaching a red light, I do often just put in neutral and put it in 2nd if the light changes. But I've become comfortable with my car and its RPM ranges, so it's basically second nature at this point. But Kenny is right. Brakes are cheaper to replace and if you aren't yet comfortable with your car's RPM range, I'd use neutral, but at the same time as you're driving, make note of what speed you're at in what gear and what RPM. It seems like a lot, but I ended up doing this without even noticing it. Then you can get into double clutch skip shift downshifts.

I learned to drive on a stick, so staying in safe rpm ranges are not an issue, like you said its just second nature. I was just more curious about downshifting (putting the down shift at around 4-5,000 rpms) and if that is putting excessive wear and tear on the engine. If in the long run i'm decreasing my engine life in any way or significant amount I obviously wouldn't want to run that risk, especially for how cheap and easy brake pads are to replace.

I've spent about 10hrs on this forum the last 2 or 3 days and haven't found much info about clutch's or DIY's for clutch replacement on my generation engine. Any links you could point me at? Any recommendations on a good performance clutch? I miss the stiff clutch and early catch on my old BMW. Thanks in advance.

By the way, why on earth would you need to double clutch? You need some major torque coming from the engine for that to be necessary, correct? I haven't sat in to many honda's the shake the car side to side when rev'd haha. (* I guess a honda would go front to back since the engines side ways lol)

One of the hills by my house is really steep, and I'm usually in 4th gear on my way to the hill. Double clutching into 2nd to go up it gives the synchros less work to do. Plus, if you're spot on, the lever slides right in(giggity). Just a little something to help prolong the life of the transmission. Most people don't do it, but I guess I'm not most people.

Well I just went a lil over 138k on my 06 ex sedan, and clutch is still strong. But I don't race the clutch, ride it, or hold it in when at stoplights. So personally with average use, it shouldn't be a concern for you for a while, especially if you have less than 100k on your civic.

RemyL31 … my 2002 honda-civic-lx came from factory with a hydraulic-clutch rather than mechanical version … she still had original clutch when we finally parted ways last year (425k @ odometer).

never ride the clutch … which can be frustrating with 5pm stop-n-go traffic or at long drive-thru lanes at the neighborhood whataburger.
