performance gauges??

Hey guys, ive noticed people talking about installing gauges like air/fuel mixtures etc, whats the purpose of this one in particular, any useful ones to install to keep my engine running smooth, the only aftermarket "performance" ive got is a SRI (+20 decibels... and +.00001 HP )

any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: performance gauges??

Most people use gauges for the looks, such as an additional coolant temp, battery voltage, exhaust temp, etc running down a cluster. Saying that, many gauges such as the air to fuel, boost (psi), oil pressure are used on more of a performance stand-point. Not saying you shouldnt use them on a stock engine. I personally think its overkill if your not running boost or at least have mild upgrades.

The purpose of a A/F gauge is to measure the amount of air in your exhaust system. And estimates the fuel to air being combusted in the cylinders of your engine. This gauge is reading what your o2 sensors reads and tells the ecu.

Re: performance gauges??

even then, a non-wideband a/f gauge will be nothing more than an annoying light show.

I have a boost gauge and wideband a/f gauge because I used to be boosted, but now that I took the turbo off, it helps me monitor my engine's health. It's always fun when I've run out of ideas of what wrong, go to a pep boys or dealership and tell them "I don't know. The AFR leans out to 10.0, then randomly goes back to it's 14.7+/- range" and seeing the "aw ****.. this kid knows what he's talking about look.." on their faces.

I also have an APEX'i VAFC-II installed that once kinda controlled AFR, but now I use solely for voltage metering (and throttle position & another tach, as well, for ***** and giggles). I like being able to monitor that, and it helped me IMMENSELY when my alternator started to **** itself, then go rapidly downhill in a matter of hours.

Re: performance gauges??

since you have a 04, the AF might do something better than my 02 car (yours have a wideband). not much useful most of the time, though. light show.
I use oil pressure and oil temperature gauges in a pod under the dash 'cos i race the car (wanna know when the car is out (minimize the damage if possible).
