Timing Belt Freak of nature!
Timing Belt Freak of nature!
I have a 2001 honda civic ex..It has 75k miles
Here in Ny we got a big snow storm and i park my car at my job,was away working for a few days..
I went to start my car and i could barely heard anything..I popped my hood and found out that the entire engine was packed with snow. I pushed it in the shop and hooked a space heater up and let it all defrost..
The starter spins and all the belts but no compression, sounds like an electric car lol..I'm guessing it has to be the timing belt but was wondering if maybe the tensioner got stuck or something?. Do you think i could have bent a valve on a half dead battery trying to start it? I wasn't going 50 miles per hour, just tried to crank it over quick. This is just a freak of an accident that happened, i never heard of this happening before
Any advice would be appreciated..I don't mind doing the timing belt, just hope the valves weren't bent Thanks

First, whats with two different usernames??
Second... Its unclear what really happened... do you have pictures of the engine bay before thawing it and do you have video of the startup??

Sorry, i thought i was a member of this forum before and signed back up(since forgot user name didn't work)
No, i didn't take pictures..Starter spins but it wont turn over(has never since this problem)..I remember in the summer i added some water to my coolant.. Maybe the water pump froze or the fuel lines? Alternator belt turns..
I rarely drive this car, because it sits at the shop and we are always out of state in company vehicles
Thanks for your time!

Its not unusual for belts to be completely knocked off if you attempt to start a car after the engine bay has been packed by heavy snow. If the belt wasn't knocked off when you go it to the shop, then my suspicion would be that slipped and put your timing off. Timing off, potentially bent valves.

Re: Timing Belt Freak of nature!
You could completely lose compression if the valves were bent badly enough, I'm fairly confident this is the issue, because its a common problem in areas with routine heavy blowing snow.
Re: Timing Belt Freak of nature!
What I can see happening is the water pump being frozen in place and the crank spinning the timing belt around it chewing up all the grooves out of the timing belt as you attempt to crank it. I've actually seen it happen on an old sunbird where the coolant was all frozen. So if you tried to crank it for a few minutes youve caused enough damage to the belt for it not to function any more.
