New to civics. Got some nasty grinding
New to civics. Got some nasty grinding
Hello, I'm new here, and new to civics all together, and i'm having a problem that has me stumped. My car is a 2001 civic DX 2dr coupe. 5 speed manual. 180xxx miles. So I start the car, engage the clutch, put it in drive, and while moving I am hearing a grinding sound. It grinds with brakes both engaged and not. Also grinds with clutch both engaged and disengaged. Only stops when the car stops moving. It sounds like it's coming from the tranny, but it could be a wheel bearing. I can't pinpoint the location of the sound, but when I take the wheel, caliper, and brake pads off then turn the rotor, it still grinds, and the rotor doesn't spin freely, it requires a considerable amount of force to turn it. It sounds like it might be coming from closer to the tranny, but I can't say that with 100% certainty. Any thoughts? If i've left out any necessary details let me know so I can thouroughly describe the situation. I was thrilled to get this car and it looks like I've got a long road ahead of me before it's in good running condition. I want to make sure I don't go buy the wrong part, or pay someone to replace something that doens't need it. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Re: New to civics. Got some nasty grinding
would a bad CV axle make a grinding sound? I was under the impression that a bad cv joint/axle will click. a bad axle was the guess of a friend of mine, and I want to agree, but I'd like more input before paying for the part.
Re: New to civics. Got some nasty grinding
i changed the brake pads and it got rid of some of the grinding, but not completely. i think they are rubbing uneven from bad struts(?) so i can hear it better while driving now. i think the sound originally in question is a cv axle, but i'd still ilke a second opinion. I tested clutch noise per instructions given in the sticky thread here. there is indeed a whirring sort of noise with the pedal up, and none with it down (input shaft bearing). the guy that sold me the car said it needs a pilot bearing also. any sounds to listen for to tell? i don't know if this guy knows for sure or not what's wrong in the tranny. also, there's a wobbling sound in the back driver-side wheel, which i assume is the wheel bearing. there are some other odd grinding/knocking sounds at random intervals in different gears...but the cv axle drowns it out to the point that i can't give accurate descriptions until it's fixed
odd that the pitch of the brakes grinding was enough to mask these other sounds. but hey i said i wanted a project so i got my wish
but anything is better than that god-forsaken hand me down chrysler i just junked out
anyways, are there any more detailed instructions on in-drive sounds to listen for? i am terrible at diagnosing problems like this without knowing exactly what to look for. i have a feeling i'm going to hear a lot of 'get a new tranny' which is what i'd love to do, but i lack the funds atm.

Re: New to civics. Got some nasty grinding
replaced the tranny fluid. or i guess i should say, i took the thick, burnt, black, pathetic excuse for tranny fluid (all 1 qt of it), and replaced it with 1.8 qts pennzoil synchromesh. i read good and bad reviews on the product, but considering the state of my transmission, i think the good outweighs the bad in this situation.
no more gears grinding while shifting, but the sound originally in question is still present, though not as severe. I am still inclined to say it has something to do with the cv axle, but I am not very experienced with suspension or transmission, so I can't say with any certainty. I have searched far and wide for similar problems but no luck. everyone else has intermittent grinding or it's condition based. this is a constant grind that happens while the car is moving. with the other noise gone i have almost pin-pointed the sound to the area just inside the part of the transmission where the cv axle goes in. any thoughts? 100+ views and not a single productive response

Re: New to civics. Got some nasty grinding
CV axles will grind after the popping stage. Is the boot torn? does the grinding increase or decrease while turning? If the boot is torn it would be 99.9% that it is the cv axle. Unfortunately you might have to change it to see. You should be able to get one with a lifetime warranty. Seeing the age of the car the axle is going to eventually go out. also if you are changing one it is always a good idea to change both. In my experience the 2nd one is always right behind the 1st one. The wheel bearings are a possibility, but it is a lot less frequent of a repair than the cv axle.
good luck
