2000 lx running hot

Hey Guys,

My coworker has a 2000 lx that has been running hot lately. I looked at it yesterday, and confirmed that the fan switches on, and it seems the thermostat is functional, as the hoses to the radiator get rather hot with the engine idling.

The problem has been happening for about a week, and he tells me the heat gauge almost hits the red.

I'm thinking that the thermostat may be on its way out, but this would be strange given coolant is making it to the radiator???

He is broke, and I told him I would help.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Bryan

hmm, usually a broken thermostat will cause the car to just reach operating temp more slowly when it gets stuck open. its rare to have them get stuck closed. if the fan is coming on, check for a coolant leak. you may be low on coolant. or there is a clog in the system (most likely radiator).

Yeah, I didn't think it was the thermostat b/c fluid is making it to the radiator... Maybe it is the water pump? Could it be "shitting the bed" and not pumping enough coolant?

My buddy says the car is not leaking coolant, as he has not nbeeded to top it off? When I checked, the overflow was spot on the line and the radiator was full.

Hmmm, maybe I will just replace out the thermostat and see if that makes a difference bofore looking at the pump. Beyond that, what could it be?

Re: 2000 lx running hot

water pump is possible too if its not turning properly and moving the coolant around, it will sit in one spot and get too hot.

Re: 2000 lx running hot

I had an Accord that overheated and the upper and lower hoses were hot (you checked both hosed, right?) and it turned out to be the radiator. Coolant was flowing but not enough. Have your radiator checked.

Re: 2000 lx running hot

i had those problems and i changed the radiator and solved it. i have a 5 speed and got parts from my friends wrecked automatic and looped the oil lines on the bottom. a automatic has 2 oil cooling lines on the bottom and a 5 speed doesnt. get a used one and change it and see if it works.

Re: 2000 lx running hot

usually the lower hose should be colder than the upper if the radiator is working properly. if you drive it hard on a hot day it may be difficult to feel a difference, but normal short distance city driving you can. or let the car warm up with the hood open and keep feeling the hoses.
