Where to Start?

I'm going to start with saying I have a '97 Coupe Ex, D16Y8, 5-speed which has about 155k miles. Everything mechanical is stock. A lot of people are telling me to do different things, which i don't mind, but they don't really know much about the car anyway. That's why i'm asking you guys what you would do. I'm trying to decide between a lot of different things, like should i get it ported/polished, get oversized valves, get a different d-series head, or what? Ideas for the bolt-ons would be sweet. The questions i'm asking are similar to others...What should I do? What would you do? Should i save for something?
Please help me out here.

-Thanks

Re: Where to Start?

intake, header, tighten throttle cable, clean intake system and related parts and sensors, check vacuum lines for cracks, denso iridium plugs, nology hotwires, upgraded engine ground wires, lubecontrol.com additives, etc. that will give you a small start. then later you can do cam, head porting, more ignition mods, and some cam gear and tuning. i wouldnt expect too much from that engine tho...

Thats a little harsh, these cars have a lot of potential. Also lets not forget Civic's are japanese designed and engineered, so many things you could do.

Re: Where to Start?

Yeah, I just got a 2-tone paint job, dropped on 17's, $1000 worth of electronics. That's why i'm wondering about performance and what not.

Re: Where to Start?

Couple of Questions...

Would finding a performance head, like one that's ported and polished already be what i need? ofc i'd get all the bolt-ons.

Other question is: May sound kind of funny but
What's the cheapest / best engine I could get? I heard b18c from someone ^^^. And how much should I expect to get that engine for?

-Thanks

clean intake system and related parts and sensors, check vacuum lines for cracks
Q1. How do I clean the intake system, and what do i need to make sure to do?

Q2. How do I check the vacuum lines?

-Thanks

Re: Where to Start?

inspect vacuum lines for cracks or tears. the intake system means the throttle body and all the sensors around it and the intake mani like idle valves. might as well get a new pcv valve too.

Re: Where to Start?

I would say a new engine would be your best bet. All B series have different hp and price tags. The jdm b18 type r that is like the holy grail of b series engines has a huge price tag for little gain over other b series. On top of that, extrememly rare. A b18 you will look at around an extra 30-50hp depending on exact engine. I've heard of as low as 600 for engine and tranny up to 4500 for the type r. It also has a lot to do with where you live. Some shops have hook ups so you can get very cheap engines with crazy low mileage where in neighborhoods like mine you pay atleast 1000 for an engine with 100k already on it...

My buddy goes to a shop in MD and he has a mkiii supra. He bought a jdm front clip with a twin turbo engine and under 35k miles on it for 3500 dollars. Thats a hookup in my eyes.

On the other hand if that seems like a lot of money with little return here is a list of where to start.

Headers & exhaust, most restrictive things on your car.
Mild cam, allow the bolt ons to be more beneficial
Headwork, allows more air in faster and out faster
CAI/SRI, allows the engine to breath better

The list can go on forever but the general point is get h/e/i and if you still want more power, start working on internals. A nice overhaul doesn't hurt a car with that many miles.

Sorry for the long post but yeah some info for you.
