DX/LX to EX head swap

Anyone around here from the Boton area who's familiar with doing this head swap? This is for a 7th gen.

Hope this is the right thread for this question.

dude, what kinda response is that, its not as easy as you claim it is. im a mechanic for a living, and it took me about 8 hours total(with drinking). it is no small task. however, if u do a search for it, ull find a diy for the headswap, and it does work, ive been driving on it for 2 months now

I know of the DIY, but I would prefer someone more mechanically inclined to help with it.

Re: DX/LX to EX head swap

mechanic work is just look cooking bro, having the right tools for the job, and the instructions. I have an ex head sitting on my computer desk now with a stage 2 cam and springs and retainers waiting to go in. I think I will complete that this weekend and then wait for the electronics. If you really arent that confident or just dont have the time to spend, take it to a shop and hand over the credit card.

Re: DX/LX to EX head swap

Would the boomslang harness work well with this swap?

Re: DX/LX to EX head swap

forget buying harnesses buddy. it's just wires. why would u waste money on that, especially for a silly head swap that gives you a few lousy horsies. all u have to do is wire vtec in and switch from 3 wire IACV t o 2 wires(it's a matter of taking one wire out and moving another one to a different slot). and then it depends on the ECU you chose for this and what ur planning to do after. p28 is the older ex/si(ca) ecu and it's easy to chip and then tune with but it's obd1 - doesn't look for knock sensor and 2nd o2 sensor, might be bad for emissions. and p2p is the EX/si(ca) ecu and its obd2 (96,97,98 = obd2a and 99,00 = obd2b) - plug and play.
tell us how it went if you decide to go with it.

and can anybody tell me how much the heads, im, tb combos go for ? and how much for the ecu that you used. thanks!

The head swap I am referring to is for the d17, not the D16. It's much different.

Re: DX/LX to EX head swap

i was about to ask you what year car you have... and i seen that you posted in the 7th gen... with that said depending on ecu swap you'll need to do a bit of wiring. what is your goal? do you plan on turboing or just doing the swap and thats it?

Re: DX/LX to EX head swap

I have a port and polished head...that's it no, no turbo nothing else. Maybe stg 1 crowers in the future. From the DIY i'm not sure how much soldering or wire splicing may be involved. I just would rather not cut up my ecu harness. I would pay the 140 and buy a boomslang harness if it meant that.

Re: DX/LX to EX head swap

I searched the forums but I have yet to get clear answer on this. If doing the head swap I want to use an EX ECU instead of the VAFC2, yes I know my key will need to be reflashed, but will my engine harness plug right into the ecu with no qualms. I have a DX, so no A/C, cruise control. If at all costs, I would like to have no wire cutting or soldering whatsoever and I avoid the need for tuning of a vafc2.

Re: DX/LX to EX head swap

u need the ex harness with teh ex ecu, no way around it, or u can go the route i went, stock lx ecu, and wire in vafcII, with air/fuel ratios and vtec engagement controllability. its really not hard, specially if u buy dezod's pnp kit for the vafcII, otherwise buy an ecu, 100 bucks or so, harness, 100 bucks or so, then key reflash, 100 bucks or so. i got my vafcII for 75 on honda tech, and 100 for pnp harness, so u decide

Re: DX/LX to EX head swap

What were/are your setting for the VAFCII. Dyno tuning with the VAFC is another 200 bux or so. And for some reason I'm getting word that the VAFC settings get overridden by my ECU after a period of time. I have an 03, so this has me slightly worried. I will explore all avenues.

Re: DX/LX to EX head swap

How's the operational stability of the pnp harness. I have heard stories of piggyback harnesess being faulty and causing problems when the car is operating. Not saying Dezod's in particular, but just want your feedback from experience with it. Right now my shop is charging me 800 form the head install, vafc 2 wiring and before and after dyno runs with vafc tuning included. Does that price sound reasonable?

Re: DX/LX to EX head swap

i havent had any problems with the pnp harness, u do have to pull 1 pin out of it to run the vtec solenoid, no biggie... with tuning and everything, thats not bad, but i did all mine in 1 weekend, well 8 hours or so, and am still tuning it, right now im getting about 37 mpg hwy/city, and am currently running a little rich, but i suggest professional tuning if u want every little bit u can get outta it
