Faulty Igniter? With Spark?
Faulty Igniter? With Spark?
Can an Igniter be faulty yet allow a spark at the wrong time?
I have an '89 Civic 1.5 Dual Point injection.
It will not start now.
Cranks normal, compression good, spark plugs are sparking, and I smell gas.
All I can guess is that the spark is happening at the wrong time.
Recently replaced coil about 3000 mile ago.
Was running good except an occasional bucking/surging/misfire when fully warmed up. Might be classical warning of a soon to fail igniter.

Re: Faulty Igniter? With Spark?
I checked the spark again, seems weak. Timing light shows about 8 degrees while cranking.
update 05/23/08...
The local parts store let me down 3 times in a row. They can only get rebuilt units, and they don't seem to understand what model goes with my engine.
There is a nice listing on http://www.hondadistributors.net/distributors.php#civic I don't know why the local guys find it so difficult.
I ordered a new unit from http://www.am-autoparts.com/ Their prices are certainly low, I hope the quality is acceptable.
I did a lot of searching, and couldn't find any bad statements about their distributors, or any statements about other companies selling better ones.
I would welcome anyones comments.........

Re: Faulty Igniter? With Spark?
I have installed the new distributor from AM-autoparts.com
Works well, no complaints.
Have driven about 1000 miles so far.

Richporter Technology products are supposed to be superior to OEM specifications so says their website...http://www.richporter.ca/
I have used this on my 89 civic about a year ago and can say i havent had any issues with it. It also comes with the coil.
