bit of a knock/tick/some other noise

first off, my car is a 2004 EX coupe. almost 120k km on it, im very good about oil changes every 5000 km....

i think this all started at 20,000 km ago when i hit 100,000 km on my car and started using synthetic oil. i noticed after about the first oil change my car was knocking/ticking on light throttle at about 3k rpm and i had a check engine light come on....

now, once in a while my car cuts out at 4k rpm (like trying to pass someone on the highway). it feels really sluggish, and is starting to concern me. should i quit being a cheap-o and go get my check engine light codes scanned, or is there possibly a way to do this from home?

i know some Chevy's you turn the key from on, to acc, to on a couple times and it starts flashing codes blah blah... anyway to do this on a honda?

any ideas?

get the code checked, alot of place do it for free. or buy a $30 ebay code reader so you always can check if something happens. im taking a wild guess and thinking its vtec system malfunction (1259).

i might call a couple shops to see if they'll check it..

Good old Canadian Tire will scan the code, and confirm the source of the problem (yay) for $105.. i might do that...

if it happens to be a vtec system malfunction, do you know what i might need to replace..?

usually 1259 means clean out the vtec solenoid oil filter screen and good as new. unless the solenoid doesnt work, then you need a new one. you can open it up tho and press on the lil button to make sure it pops back up.

Make sure you are not low in oil. This code will also be thrown from low oil I guess from not enough oil pressure to go into VTEC. I had this problem from an oil leak I didn't know about from a torn gasket on the cam seal.
