belt squeaking
okay my belts are making really bad and loud squeaks esp when turning but sometimes going straight. it gets loud and quiet from time to time, but its very annoying. ive narrowed it to the alternator belt. spraying belt dressing didnt work, any ideas? it used to only happen in rain, but its doing it in the cold too.
Re: belt squeaking
1. check the tension on the belt, thats the most likely cause
2. check ur powersteering fluid, pumps tend to squeal without enough fluid
3. recheck the tension on the belt, i bet its loose, if u dont have any more room to tighten, ur belt is too big, get a smaller one

Re: belt squeaking
thanks, is the tension easy to adjust? im sure its the alt belt cause the squeaks change pitch when i use accessories. then ill look into a smaller belt but i remember changing it was a pain.

Re: belt squeaking
idle is not too loud, driving is really loud. then it just stops completely, and starts again. now i remember, i had a really hard time loosening those bolts down there.

Re: belt squeaking
ya okay basically the shop said the top mounting bolt was about to fall off. and they couldnt tighten it without removing the ps pump. so i just had them take care of it. everythings nice and tight again and no squeaking.

Re: belt squeaking
Yeah, I was going to say it's a lot easier to get to if you just pull the PS pump and move it out of the way. Beats going through the fender. Seems like that top alternator bolt likes to loosen on it's own. Marcuse just had the same problem and I know I found mine backed all the way out once last summer. Good thing is that the bolt can't physically fall out because there isn't enough room between the frame and the mount for it to come all the way out. Irritating though. Glad you got it fixed!
