Help with this D17 (yes I searched)

Hey guys,

Sorry, I searched through the D17 threads I found and couldn't find the answer to this. I am about to slap a turbo on my D17A1 and am planning on about an 8 PSI boost or so (which was recommended to me). Most people I talk to are telling me that while the reliability will go down, it's not a big deal. However, one thing that bugs me is one person in particular was adamant on telling me that if I turbo this engine, I will have to essentially rebuild half of it and replace half of its components every 20k or so. Can anyone offer me some comments on this? If this one statement turns out to be true I may have to tune for NA. Thanks guys.

you are fine with 6-7 PSI on stock internals with this engine. If you do the install correctly, and make sure you get a good tune there is no reason why it shouldn't last longer than 20k unless you beat the **** out of it and then some. About the NA comment, you are better off putting a K20 in it then trying to get NA numbers out of the D17.

6-7 PSI with stock internals huh? What kind of HP increase does that give? Anything decent? And yeah, I heard the K20 swap is a really good thing to do but man, I don't even know where to look for one of those, I can't find anywhere up here. But yeah, 6-7psi would give me how much roughly?

depends on what size turbo, intake manifold, cam, a bunch of different variables but roughly 60-80 hp

Yeah, like Pitch said, lots of variables here. You can estimate between 170-190whp depending on your setup. 8psi should be just fine on the engine as long as your compression is good before you start the install and you keep up on the maintenance.

Awesome, thanks a lot guys, that really helps out a lot. Hopefully I don't totally screw over something major, haha. Also, Premium fuel yes or no? That's my other big question. A lot of people said yes to Premium fuel but some advise way against it.

If you're boosted Premium fuel is must. No way around it. You need the higher octane to avoid misfires under boost.

I've never heard of being required to rebuild it. the problem is most people blow headgaskets, at which point, i guess half the motor is apart. You can plan on doing the HG the first time.... as the head bolts suck, but once you do that, I dont think you'll be blowing up too much.

well, the rebuilding after every 20k is a bunch of bullshit...yes obviousl after 50-60k u WILL hav to change a few things here and there IF you maintain it well and dont *** it like an ***... otherwise with proper fitting and tuning (professionally done) u shud be ok and be daily driving happily if ur motor is fine, since ive seen alot of ppl doing it themselves and ending up wit blown motors, so if u dont noe wat ur doing, stay away from ur car till the workshop is not done with it... otherwise turbo is the way to go due to the excess power and especially the fun of a turbo'd car... hav fun and play safe!
