Shifter moves in 2nd and gears dont engage (continues after tranny overhaul + reman)

I have an 04 Civic Si. The shifter moves when driving in 2nd gear (it moves back when applying throttle, forward when letting off. The car jerks with the movement.) I also have intermittent trouble getting into first and reverse, and sometimes the other gears, even when parked.

I took it into the dealership (because the tranny is still under warranty.) but they say they can't find the problem/ it's not bad enough. They do, however, want to replace the shifter.

Any ideas?

thats pretty normal. i mean the shifter is pretty much connected to the engine and the engine moves around a lot.. and you say its difficult for it to get into gear? just change the tranny fluid out. if the problem persists; then it could be the sychros are going bad? not sure; but anyways when its difficult to get into gear dont force the shifter into gear. shift it into other gears then try to shift it into the "hard" gear. may take a few tries but it works.

Hmm thanks. I would figure that movement would be much more likely in first gear if it was from the engine. Considering it doesn't happen in any other gear and 2nd is fairly hard to get into I just concluded that there's something wrong with the tranny.

I'll have my engine/tranny mounts looked at and see if there's anything going on there. I'll get my fluid changed too

Well I had the mounts checked a few months back, as well as the transmission fluid changed, and there was no improvement. The dealership also replaced the shifter with no noticeable improvement. But finally after 8 months of MANY visits to the dealership and several calls to Honda Canada (who don't seem to give a sh*t) The dealership finally got authorization from Honda on Friday to pull the tranny apart. Will let you know how it goes/ what they replace to fix it.

From what your explaining I can't imagine it would be anything but the gearbox giving you the problems.

Re: Shifter Moves in 2nd, help please!

Well I got my car back from the dealership. They told me they replaced all of the forward gear sets and shift forks, as well as the reverse gear. He said there's no way there could be any more problems. BUT there still is

The shifter still moves in 2nd gear, and some gears now (seems like 4th and 5th.) are difficult to engage. Reverse didn't even want to engage for me the first time. Is there anything else that could be causing the problem?

Below are pictures showing the invoice of the work done.

Wait wait, last time i checked, it is connected to the transmission through linkage

Clickright..how many miles does your clutch have and how hard fo you drive it? The movement is honestly normal, mine does in in 2nd and 3rd. I just learned to live it with..it doesnt do it when im doing normal driving, but if im like 4k and punch it the shifter will move back, and when i let off the shifter will move forward. Its got to have some margin of movement..its running through linkage. try a short throw shifter but im afraid you will still have a little bit of movement. Even the toploader in my cobra moves somewhat.

Also..my reverse is hard to hit when im slowwwly moving backwards or forwards. it just wont go in, so make sure you are full stopped, and if it doesnt go in, but it in neutral, let out the clutch, push it back in, and then go into the gear again..should work like a charm. Gears are hard to get in sometimes, especially when im on my way to school in the morning when its like 10 out lol, but yeah, i havent shifted a transmission where all the gears were smooth as butter and didnt at some point catch or not go into gear.

Hi Alex857,

My clutch and car only has 69,000KM on it. The shifter moves in 2nd even with the slightest amount of power going to it (even parked and letting the clutch out.) My buddy as an 02 Civic and his shifter doesn't move a even the slightest in any gear and all shifts are smooth. Reverse I can understand an issue with, but the rest of the gears -- there is something up. Even just normal driving yesterday it felt like the I was hitting something before I made it into the gears (as I was about 1/2 way in)

Re: Shifter Moves in 2nd (Updated... continues after tranny overhaul)

Alright, well they replaced the tranny with a remanufactured unit today, and the shifter no longer moves around in 2nd gear, but, one again, some gears have difficulty engaging. This time it's first, second, and especially 4th!

The dealership didn't even test drive the car and I'm getting extremely angry and frustrated at this point. I really don't know what what to do anymore.
