need some advice

Hey guys,

I'm totally new to car audio but I just picked up a sub from a friend for cheap. It's a Kicker Comp VR 12" in a box. I have no clue what amp I should use to power it.
He told me he burned out an 850 watt one and I should get at least 1000 watt.
He also has a Lightning Audio 1 Fared capacitor he can sell me for like $40, do I need it?
Also, what gauge wire should I use and do I need fuses and all that junk. Basically, what do I need to have a decent working sub (rest of car system is stock except for HU). I'm basically going for cheap but sufficient here, not top quality stuff.

Thanks in advance.

I found this on crutchfield, any good? http://www.crutchfield.com/S-P87Epjx...613KAC9102#Tab

Is that your sub?
If so hear are the
STATS:

12" sub with dual 4-ohm voice coils
suitable for marine use
injection-molded polymineral cone
double-stitched, foam-ribbed Santoprene rubber surround
frequency response: 25-500 Hz
power handling: 50-400 watts RMS
peak power: 800 watts
sensitivity: 86.7 dB
top-mount depth: 6-5/16"
sealed box volume: 1.0-4.6 cu. ft.
ported box volume: 1.75-2.25 cu. ft.

6 gauge wire is OK, I personally would get 4 gauge.
Your sub max watts are 800, soooo a shitty 1000 whatt amp would be fine.
Or a real nice 800 watts amp like audiobahn would pound this thing.
PS: I relly like audiobahn so this is just my oppinion what you shoud get.
this one is 4ohm compatable with a 800 watt max so it will be the exact
specs your sub demands!

http://www.affordable-caraudio.com/audiobahn/a8000v.htm
this amp will give your sub 400 watts the entire time it is on!!! WOW!
In other words youll push this sub to the MAX!!
But you wont blow the sub or your amp! I promess!

just make sure you buy an amp thats 800 watt max @ 4ohm youll be good to go.

any other questions just ask man!!! Arizona Represent!

he could blow the sub if he set his gain to high or if he puts the volume high and mega distortion.

Ok, this sub has an RMS of 400 watts, so get an amp with an RMS of 400 watts (preferably from a reputable brand, eg. Kicker, RF, Audiobahn, Alpine and not Rockwood, Legacy, Lanzar etc). Forget about max power cuz u don't want to blow it and waste your time and money. Also, I would go to Walmart and buy the Schosce amp kit with 4 gauge wire and you should be good to go on the wiring kit, everything u need is included and its like $20. Here is a link to ebay for an amp that should be perfect for this sub- http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-06-KICKER-ZX...QQcmdZViewItem. The ZX (KX) 400.1 (or 350.2) just make sure that when you wire it you can maximize the output of your amp by running at at 2 or 4 ohms, whichever the amp has the most RMS at. Check the amp and the sub for wiring diagrams on this.

sweet. thanks for the specs and advice. it doesnt actually look like that but i bet it's just an older model or something. in the middle of the sub it says "kicker compVR" in red i think.

where's a good place to get the wireing? and how much should i expect to spend on one of those amps you mentioned? i'm probably going to get it used to save some cash because im broke as a joke right now.

4 ohm probily.

Yes you cluld get some distortion with a "heavy" amp but thats what Id buy.

It too will give you a little more to play with tho.

Wiring kits cost like $50 or somthing like that.

If you break the 1000 watts mark Id personally would ge the $40 cap.

just my .2!
