Shifting Problems..... HELP!
Shifting Problems..... HELP!
For the past few days my car hasn’t been shifting correctly. My car shifts fine from first to second, but grinds going second to 3rd and 3rd to 4th, then 4th to 5th is fine. The odd thing about it is if I were to down shift to either 3rd or 4th there is no grinding. What could be causing this problem? Is it my shifter, clutch, or trans? I have a strong feeling that it is my REVO SS. But I’m not 100% sure, and I don’t want to buy a new SS and find out that it’s was the clutch or the trans.
of corse it's the trans. i had that problem too. it would grind and some times pop out of 2nd. i think at the time. i had bad engine seals (3 of them) and oil leaked onto the clutch causeing the clutch to go bad... so there is your answer it's the clutch.
^^^^the only thing that that would do is cause the clutch to slip, it would have absolutly nothing to do with grinding.
Your shifter has NOTHING to do with it either, it sounds like your sycros are going bad.

Well I don’t think that it’s the clutch or fly wheel, I had the stock parts replaced with ACT about 20,000 miles ago. I also had the syncros replaced in all the gears at the same time. But if the syncros were going out why would the car shift perfectly from 4th to 3rd? I’m not 100% sure how syncors work, but wouldn’t think that shifting 3rd to 4th or shifting 4th to 3rd would make a difference. One thing that I did notice driving my car today is that there is much more play (about 1/2 inch) in the shifter in 3rd and 4th gear compared to 1st, 2nd, 5th, and rev. (almost non) with this in mind, I think it’s the small joint on the shifter that is causing too much play and then in turns effects the ability for a clean shift.

YES!
"When this plastic cage breaks, the ball bearings load up one side of the bearing. This allows the input shaft to walk side to side slightly, which causes the gears to not mesh up right. This causes a whining and growling sound. But when you press in the clutch, the input shaft stops spinning, so the noise goes away."
