Oil Drain Bolt (Can't get it off)

Man I always took my car to the dealer to get oil changes, but today I wanted to try to do it myself and when I was attempting to get the drain bolt off I couldn't because they torqued it on so tight. Oh yeah they didn't use a crush washer either so it is metal on metal contact. I was seriously trying for like 30 min. to get it off. I am going to borrow one of my buddy's cordless impact guns to see if I can't get it off that way. You think that will hurt the oil pan at all?

Think reverse hammer drill... they're not overly powerful.
The torque spec is like 27 ft lbs.... its not a lot. Are you sure you're loosening it and not tightening it?
It shouldn't be that hard to get off.

just put a 17MM wrench on it and use a rubber mallet and hit the wrench to loosen it. It really shouldnt be that tight. And as boilermaker said, are you sure you arent accidentally trying to tighten it. righty tighty, lefty loosey. the bolt really cant be that tight. that bolt can only be tight so much before it will strip. And it isnt that much. I have first hand experience on that.

LOL! Yes guys I know I am trying to loosen it, (Counter Clockwise). So the socket size is 17mm? ok. I think the bastard who put it on last used one of those impact wrenches and tightened the bastard all the way down. If I get it off I'm gonna chuck it through the Honda dealership window. Those bastards

just go to the dealer and be like "wtf!? fix it for free.. or else.." or something along the lines of that..

its their fault for torquing that thing down like a bitch as opposed to the 27ft-lbs..

that's why I always DIY my oil changes ;P

honda stealership techs always have a habit of using their impact with everything... lug nuts especially.

guys, the dealer isnt going to use an impact to put on the drain bolt. If they did, it would imediately strip. And probably crack the pan. again, it doesnt take much for that bolt to strip. it isnt like you can torque it down to 100 ft. lbs. Besides, I have never seen any tech ever use a impact to put a drain bolt on. Doesnt mean it doesnt happen though.

WooT! I just finished changing my oil for the first time!

I had one one my auto tech buddies look at the bolt and he turned it right away, he was like "There's nothing wrong with this." Pretty much made me look like a dumbass. Well he loosened it a little so when I got home I unbolted it rather easily. Now the Filter was a bitch to get off. But after 30 min. I finished the oil change. Nothing like the satisfaction of doing it yourself.

(Oh yeah, and I was tounge-lashed at for the idea of using an impact wrench to loosen it, my friend was like that's the dumbest thing you could do.)

Thanks for the help guys!

its not uncommon for a tech to use a air ratchet to remove a drain bolt, but they shouldnt use it to reinstall it. an air ratchet operates at a much lower torque then a impact so it would be ok to use.

i got the drain bolt off easily... the most trouble was with the oil filter, it was just impossible to take it off by hand... had to hammer in a screwdriver to leverage it out

try to put some Pb blaster on it. You can get ti at autozone just about everyplace that has automotive has it. Well spray it on there let it sit for about 15 minutes and then try to take it off. I just did struts on my saturn and i used it and the bolts have been threw 10 years of salt first try they came off. Good luck

yup i agree...its what 17mm i think anyways..get a 6point socket (not 12 point) 1/2 inch drive and a 1/2 drive craftsman t-bar....aka breaker bar...not the ratchet ..put it like this, to remove lugs i use a 19mm socket 1/2 drive with a 1/2 drive tbar and they easily removed my brother overtorqued lug nuts with one hand
