HX fuel economy
HX fuel economy
Any ideas as to why gas mileage on my 2003 HX ain't what it used to be? I have 72,000 miles on it and gas mileage (which I measure at every fill-up!) has been slipping, probably by about 5-10%. All important maintenance has been done (air filter, plugs, oil changes, tire pressure monitored). Is it possible that it could be running a little too rich? if so, can the mixture be adjusted by a backyard mechanic with limited resources such as myself?
Any suggestions are appreciated...

Are you in a cold weather area? If so, a 5-10 percent drop since summer would be about correct. If not, make sure that you are not carrying any extra weight. Check the pressure again, cold, sometimes one tire being off can cause a 2-3 percent reduction. Check for obstacles blocking the air intake, something might have gotten sucked up into the intake. Lastly, make sure the parking brake is completely disengaged (I had a car once that the light wouldn't go on until the SECOND click).
Those are about all the tips I can give you.

ok thanks for the input Zac.
Yes, I'm in frozen NY, so that could be it. I was also thinking of buying one of those Tornadoair things for the intake to swirl my mixture, which makes total sense to me. For now I guess I will have to live with 40mpg...

your complaining about 40MPG????
Most of us here arent getting even 30 MPG and we are satisfied. I get about 31 MPG all highway miles. And that to me is fine. That also is with 111K miles on an 02.
If you are getting 40 MPG then nothing is wrong with your vehicle.

My aunt get 50 MPG out of her HX.... but drives slower than my grandmother.
Anyway, cold weather hurts MPG. My truck went from 19 MPG during the summer to 15 MPG here in Ohio.

Do not buy a Tornado thing..... many people have proven that does not work, in fact some people have had the fins break and get sucked down the intake and into the engine. It doesn't work because the engine now has to pull harder to get air in to make it swirl. So while you gain .2 MPG because of the swirl effect, you loose .5 MPG because it is hard to pull it in.

As a hybrid owner, our philosophy is to warm the car up while driving. Drive the car at modest RPM and speed until the engine is at running temperature. Better to be moving while warming rather than sitting.
