5000k for oil changes?

Well i got me a 2005 lx sedan, and the dealer said there is no more break in period and the oil should only be changed every 5,000, is this true and best? also i usualy get my tires rotated everytime i get the oil changed? is that also a good time? rather then 3-4k as it as before

Don't do your first oil change for a good 5000 miles or so. The oil from the factory is different than standard oil. It's high in moly content to help the engine break in and seal properly.

Breakin time is a topic of high debate with no real honest answers, so basically.... drive it how you are going to drive it for the rest of it's life. That's the best advice I can give.

As for oil change intervals, on regular oil, 5000 is fine, on synthetic, you can go probably 7500+ miles between changes.

the oil that comes from the factory has nothing to do with metal shavings or filtered oil.

it uses an addative called molybednum (spelling?) which helps coat the engine properly, create better seals, and help the engine break in process. the dealership that told you there is no breakin period is full o crap.

counting miles on to your next oil change varies. some drive hard, race, just cruise, drive like grannies, etc. it depends on your driving habits as well.

my driving style is spirited/daily driver. i get average of 5000 miles off fully syn mobil 1 motor oil (5w30). but i change it whenever its a very dark brown texture or even sooner.

every 5000 man, your safe...I go 5000 usually, the manual says 10,000 for normal driving - I drive a little hard on my car, so 5000 - 7500, usually always 5000, I use 5w-20 and a purolator filter...don't listen to the fools on here that say change your oil 3000 miles, read the honda manual and believe it.....

Put 500 miles on it and take it back to the dealer for your free oil change. I would recomend oil changes every 3k with regular oil and 5k with synthetic. The car only takes 4 courts. A large debate is the viscosity to use. I would recomend using conventional 5w20 oil for the first 15k and then start using synthetic if you are one that uses synthitic oils. This allows the engine bearings, piston rings and the valve train to properly wear in. I see you live in California which has a tropical climate, alot of people use 0w20 oil, for what reason I dont know, this is like pouring water in your crankcase, its very thin. If your going to use synthetic oil I would suddgest 10w30. Synthetic oil is known to be thinner than conventional oil anyway so a little thicker oil in Calilfornia would be perfect for you. If your not one to change your oil walmart is cheap, 30 bucks for Mobile 1 and 17.00 for conventional oil. I recomend the first change at 500-1000 because of all the assemble lube used during assembly, also if there were any burrs or trash that got loose after assembly you can get rid of them quickly. Genraly like the other guy said, there are alot of moly additives used during assembly because it bonds to metal, after several hundred miles it is no longer needed. This is just my two cents, its your car though, but this is how I have maintained my car, the engine is the only part of the car that I have not had any problems with so far and I have 45k on it now. The rest of the car has given me nothing but headaches! Good luck with yours!

no, dont do that at all by any means. after several hundred miles your car is not broken in enough.

i have no idea why you'd change the factory oil at 500 miles. wait 5000 miles, and allow the moly/factory oil to do its job.

and dont change the oil every 3k with dino and 5k with synthetic.

even driving hard, 5k on dino oil, and 7500 on synthetic at LEAST.

so whatever honda says about there vehicles is the best answer?
every mechanic ive talked to changes there oil at LEAST every 5k, most of the time its 3500 miles. it wont hurt to change motor oil sooner than expected, only loss is your money. im not saying honda is wrong, 5000 miles per oil change is perfectly fine. i would rather let my engine eat up good fuel than dark brown worn out oil with no fresh addictives every time i drive.

"so whatever honda says about there vehicles is the best answer?"

When they've got nothing to gain by making the statement, then yeah, they built it, they should know. 10,000 is a little long for comfort on a dino oil, but i'd run Mobil 1 or equivalent to 10K and not think twice. You'd think Honda would recommend a shorter OCI just to help line the service manager's pockets a little thicker, but I guess not.

yea, when you look in the manual or go to honda they claim that our civics can go 5000 between oil changes. every 3000 and it should be changed, unless using synthetic, period

Uh no...I have gone 5k on dino and have gone over 7500 on synthetic, and that is with autocrossing. If I drove normally, I wouldn't think twice about taking my car longer than that. You can go 5k with dino and 7500-10k with synthetic. 3k is a complete rip off unless you know your engine is old and worn out.

no robbclark is right. 3k changes are a thing of the past. even fords go 5k now on dino oil. 3k = pissing money away. if you change it every 3k, you might as well change it every time you fill up with gas, cuz it's gonna have the same effect.

That's what I did - my 01 is now at 112,000 miles and still going strong. I usually change oil at 4000 mile intervals after the first 5000 mile oil change. I might even drive this car to 200,000 miles or more.

Synthetic oil is subject to the same viscosity standards as conventional oil, so no, it isn't "thinner."
