For some reason, I can't find how you can do that. Are those instructions correct?

I even got pissed, and tried prying the black piece of plastic around the gold-silver shift bezel with a flat-head screwdriver, but that wouldnt work well either.

Ok... I'm not quite sure where you're stuck but I'm guessing it's the first step

^^that step is correct. Grap the corners with your fingers and pull up. They're held in with self locking tabs... when you pull on them... it should pop off...

Follow the DIY on this site for center console removal. Skip the first 3 pics and instructions on LEDautomotive.com. Then proceed from the 4th pic and instruction.
yeah u need to take the entire center console out which when u know where the bolts are takes just a few minutes. then push in 4 separate tabs and pop it out, and you need to take hte shift **** off, which is held on by 2 screws.
