What color LED's to use, when replacing incandescent?

Say I'm replacing my brake light bulbs with a super bright LED array, with a cree chip and lens in the end. What color LED's should I use?

Because the incandescent bulb is WHITE and shines through the RED brake light lens, to APPEAR red.

BUT they're selling RED LED arrays for this. Should it be white, or wouldn't it make a difference?

Re: What color LED's to use, when replacing incandescent?

For my trunk lid tail, and side markers (168s) I used the red leds.

If you look at them now you can see how the incandescent through the red lense have an almost orange look (tails)

Leds look true red.

I have kicked around the idea of trying the new brake/tail led assemblies recently released. But just changed out my 7443s that were 5 years old and I would need something led for the 7440 brake light.

Since posting this, I came across another thread at a different site, saying that, because the red lenses only pass red light, we should use red LED's. Sounds right.

+1. Red lights are best. Whites would "wash out" the color a bit.
