SRS Lights
SRS Lights
Guys, my Civic got into an accident & just got it fix. Someone hit me from the side. The quarter panel is damage & the door is slightly damage. I took it to a body shop & they replaced the quarter panel & the door skin. Now my SRS light stays on. The shop said that it's because that they have to take out the seatbelt to replace the quarter panel. My car doesn't have a side airbags. They told me to just go to a Honda dealership to clear out the code. Today I took it to my friend's shop & when he tried to clear it out, the SRS light still came back on. What do you guys think I should do? Any advice?

Honda charged me $89 to hook it up and see what was wrong. They found nothing and reset it. Then I found that DIY and just did it myself the next time. Be prepared for a big bill though if you take it in.
I'm gonna call a friend of mine today who is a Honda technician at one of the local Honda dealership & have him scan it in to see what's the problem with the SRS because I've tried the DIY thing & the SRS won't come off so there is a problem with my SRS.
SRS light can come on for two reasons. Side air bags malfunction or seat belt tensioner malfunction. You mentioned that you don't have side air bag so that is not your problem. That leaves with seat belt. I would go back to the body shop and tell them to fix your tensioner.
SRS LIght - Another Reason
Have read all the postings about SRS lights with interest. We recently acquired the third Civic in our family - a 2002 LX one. Our sons have 2001 LX ones, neither of which have ever had an SRS light problem.
Anyhow, we noticed the SRS light on when leaving the dealer for a test drive with the 2002 Civic. Ah, not good we thought. The dealer checked it out and found the problem was NOT with the SRS circuit but with the alternator. The alternator was voltage regulating high, at 15.8 to 16.5 volts. Apparantly this can also cause the SRS light to come on. Somewhat skeptically (having read nothing of that sort of a problem in a posting) we agreed to have the alternator replaced. Immediately the SRS problem was cured.
So, our experience shows that if the SRS goes through its initial start up check OK, (ie light comes on says on for 10 seconds and then shuts off) then the SRS is OK. If the SRS light then comes on later during driving, check the regulated voltage. If it is high, think about replacing your alternator. The dealer also suggested that it was advisable to do that since the high voltage can adversely affect other components .. if you "toast" the computer on high voltage be ready for a BIG repair bill!
Good luck. PS - of course we love our civics!
