Well the auto will rob tons of hp. The best thing you can do for an old car is a complete tune up. Also, an air intake helps alot on the older models because the stock system is so restrictive. There are prolly alot more performance parts for your car as well. Try intake, header, exhaust, aem pulleys, and vafc to tune the fuel for starters. Best things that you can do cheap is maintenance stuff.

--fuel system cleaner added to gas (greased lightning is very good, also lucas)
--new air filter (or intake system)
--new spark plugs (NGK iridium IX is better than stock)
--oil change
--tranny fluid change
--valve adjustment maybe?

Also, lightening up the car by removing heavy items will help acceleration. Toss the spare and get a can of fix-a-flat for starters. Small rims are a plus.
