SRS Module

Recently purchased a "water damaged" CIVIC LX car. The SRS light indicates a problem. Replaced the SRS module but the problem remains. Does anyone know if the module must be reprogrammed by a dealer to reset the warning indicator??

just a shot in the dark here but have you tried disconnecting the battery waiting a couple minutes then reconnecting it??? this should reset the ecu

just be aware that when you disconnect the battery you will need to input your radio code again.

Yes, the battery was disconnected before the module was replaced. The module was "used" and I'm not sure if it is bad or if it just needs reprogramming. Just trying to avoid going to the dealership unless absolutely necessary.

Ok well im looking at my Honda service manual right now and I have a few questions for you.

1) Was this LX(not the car the SRS unit came from) ever in an accident that would have airbags deploy? If so you have to replace all SRS items, front airbags, side airbags and seat beat tensioners. If they were deployed or used. A common problem is that people forget to replace the seat belt tensioners after an accident causing the SRS light to stay on.

2) Do you have a device that can measure voltage and resistance? If so there are some additional tests you can follow. These tests can more accuratly pinpoint the problem however they all end in replacing something.

Basically there are 5 places your problem could lie.

1) Deployed SRS systems that were never replaced
2) Faulty floor wire harness or dashboard wire harness
3) Faulty SRS unit
4) Faulty guage cluster assembly.
5) Battery/ system voltage above 15.2V causes the SRS light to come on

OK there are 2 types of guage clusters avaiable in the civic.

Type 1 has 4 circles in total, 2 large ones and 2 smaller ones on each side, the majority of civic owners have this type. There are 2 different 4 circle variations.

Type 2 has 3 circles, one center large circle, with 2 slightly smaller circles on the sides.

I need to know which Type you have

This may sound stupid but make sure you have exactly the same module as you took out of the flood car. We have seen problems with used modules that are actually from different optioned cars. Check the numbers on both units. Also how high was the water in the car. You could have a water damaged side or front airbag or belt tensioner. I know you do not want to go to the dealer but sometimes they can tell you very quickly which component is causing the light. (we sometimes resort to this in an independent shop rather than use up alot of time)

hes got a point, they can plug a code reader into the car that will tell you exactly what needs to be fixed, these are stored codes called DTC's
