Installation of sub and amp in 2004 EX
Hey guys, I have a question about installing a sub and amp unit. It's a combo unit, Infinity 200 watt amp and 10 inch sub. Best Buy quoted me around $70 or so for the parts to install it. Since they've tried to sell me uncessary parts already, I'm curious what's actually needed to install it so they don't sell me anything I don't need. I have a 2004 Civic EX coupe with keyless entry, if that makes a difference. Thanks.
Define what wasn't needed. IMO I prefer some things that aren't needed doing installs, but then again I'm a neat freak.
For example, I can put in a HU w/o a wiring harness. Cost is $1 (connectors). But then later the dash is a hack job when I take out the radio. Plus this takes time.
On the other hand I can get 2 adapters. Say Pioneer to universal connector, and then a universal to Honda Civic connector. Cost is $15. But then the radio is installed w/o cutting any wires ever. This takes no time at all, just clip all the connectors together. Couldn't get any easier or neater.

For the head unit, they told me that the factory unit controls the keyless entry and dome lights on the 7th generation Civics. So if they take it out to put in a 3rd party unit, in order to keep the keyless entry working, they would need to put in a $40 module. I've learned that's BS. Because of that, I'm looking to get a rough idea of what's needed for the sub and amp so I know they're not trying to pull the same thing. I just called Best Buy back and the guy told me off the top of his head it's like $83 for the power wires and RCA connections. And I asked him about the head unit since this was a different store and he confirmed the module for keyless entry isn't needed on the 7th gen Civics.

If Im not mistaken all you need is the wiring and maybe a signal convertor (converts high level output to a low level output for an amplifier to use) but I think the base link has a high level input so the converter may not be needed. But damn $80 for wiring thats a rip off! IMO
I got my amp and sub installed with Stinger / Monster for just over $70. Granted I've dropped more than a few bucks with this shop, but labor is still labor.

Running the cables isn't all that hard (just time consuming)...the pain can be getting the dash apart.

Stock HU materials:
FM Modulator or Line out convertor (hi-level invertor), RCA's, Power and ground wire, Remote turn on lead, speaker wire, connectors or solder gun and rosin core solder.
Cost: between 30-50 USD
Aftermarket HU (assuming you also have to install HU):
HU wiring harness, dash kit, RCA's, Power, ground, remote t/on lead, speaker wire, connectors or solder gun and rosin core solder.
Cost: between 40-60 USD (depending on wiring harness price and dash kit price mainly)
time to install depends on level of experience. if you've done it before, might take you 30 minutes. if it's your first install, or first time taking out the hu, possibly an hour or more. all depends on how valuable your time is. there is no control module needed for keyless entry (at least to my knowledge). I've installed about 10 hu's in the 04 civic, no problems with keyless entry yet.
