So has anyone done the "custom exhaust piping" thing?
A lot of people say they're about to do things but never post back with their results.
So, has anyone ordered a random, name brand, or generic exhaust (just the muffler or axleback) and then gone to a muffler shop and gotten custom piping done?
If so, what muffler did you use? What size piping did you use? And how do you like it? Did you get any gains? Of course, by "gains" I mean "power." Also, how does it sound?
Thanks.

Yeah, I bought a Hayame exhaust from diamond bar honda...it was a tanabe racing madalion look a like. Anyways I went to my local muffler shop and charged me 100 dollars to do straight pipe from the cat back, anyways after it was installed I turned it on and broooooom..... it had a very nice deep tone to it, actually sounded like I had huge amounts of power from the way it sounded, the good thing about it that it was loud when you were close, but if you were a good 60 feet away it didn't sound extremely loud at all so the cops ignored me. Oh yeah i did the piping in 2 1/4inches, I had good take off power and some mid range but then I lost power while in fifth gear going only 110. With stock exhaust I could max out at 115, so thats the down fall. But I don't know if you drive that fast in the middle of the night on an empty freeway
yeah man just go to your local shop and have it done!!! I would never buy any of those high dollar Cat Backs!!! Maybe the Magnaflow one.... But the difference between the high dollar and just haveing a shop do it, (as far as power) Its pretty damn close to the same, our cars dont have alot of bends, so not having the mandrel bent isnt gonna be a big deal.. Anyways thats just my opion..

ya i did. i have an apexi n1 style muffler with 2.5" piping. sounds great and looks awesome. power, maybe, it has a little more kick in 1st gear. i paid $50 for the muffler and $130 for the piping. it was well worth it. you can check my members rides for some pictures of it.
i guess I'll go to Meineke and get this done sometime, i've had my axle-back since July but i wasnt sure if i really want to do this sent i think they weld? And later on i might get a different exhaust...but whatever..still a lot cheaper than a cat-back system and i guess you do get some gains

I got the obx axle-back with b2 muffler from mufflertech.com for $140 shipped, then went to merlin muffler and got custom piping the make a cat-back which cost $90. I love the sound. It is a very deap sound. Hard to explain but I can send a sound clip of it.

oh sorry I had minimal gains, nothing to rave about but not many other exhaust systems can say any better. I also got 2 1/4" piping, with a magnaflow high flow resonator.

I could be wrong, but I think I'm close to right. lol
This has been discussed, yes an EX can go 130. And I would like to know more about your 2" piping i have 2 1/4 and its CRUSH BENT damn it i hate it. well i guess i wouldn't tell the difference. But make sure you get mandrel bent...and yes your gonna pay more for it.

The only way more HP can get you a higher top speed is if your previous top speed was drag limited (in other words, if you didn't have enough power to accelerate any further because of drag). If your top speed was redline limited, more HP won't change that at all.

I got an N1 style muffler. I got it put on as a bolt on 2.25 inch axle back. (the muffler shop supplied a new flange). Later i'm going to get the rest of my piping done too, but i want it to be bolt on and not welded so i have a full bolt on catback in case i want to go back to stock piping and stock muffler.
For the muffler I bought if off a member for: $25
To get it put on as bolt-on 2.25 inch axle back: $65
I'm guessing its going to be around $100 for me to get my piping done with new flanges. If it sounds to raspy, I'm going to get a resonator put on too. I'll see how it sounds first without it.
I don't like the idea of welding being so permanent...
As for the gains, I didn't feel any with the axle-back. I did feel gains though when I drove without a muffler and just the stock piping and resonator

i have a OBX-R header for an EX,wrapped, (have a LX) stock piping, it's like 2 1/8" i think. no cat, o2 simulator on 2nd o2 sensor, stock resinator, mugen reverberating muffler.
there is no need to get piping on the D17 unless you are running a higher compression or forced induction. (turbo)
this is a waste of money. keep your stock piping, it was designed to give maxium flow, while maintaining proper back pressure.
but whatever you want to spend your money on......that's cool.....
got some good gains from my set-up. when you remove that restrictive header, (cat in header) it got mad power!!
