HIT and RUN, know who did it. UGH
So I'm currently in Boston living at my sister's fiancee's house and parking in my sister's parking space.
So rewind to last Friday (my birthday), I park my car at my sister's parking spot around 11pm. At that time, I see the guy with the assigned parking space next to mine pulling out of his space. I think nothing of it and go on my merry way.
I wake up saturday and get my car and go to best buy to shop for some things. Then I drive to school to do some schoolwork and as I'm getting out of my car my gf is like omg was that there before? She points to my right rear bumper and taillight. I notice a HUGE gash through the paint on my bumper and my taillight has a huge scuff mark and pieces chipped off it.
We decide to drive back to best buy to see if someone hit and run me there. I drive by the space I parked in, and notice that the bmw that was parked to the right of my car was still there. So we concluded that it couldn't have happened in best buy.
I drive back to my parking space at home to check it out and whaddya know..... there are pieces of my taillight on the parking lot floor between my car and the car to my right. I figure the truck to the right of my car did it since sometimes it's hard for him to get out of his space (he's parked between me and a fence). Right now I'm stark raving mad. His car isn't there and wasn't there the whole weekend. So I spend the whole weekend paranoid that he took his car to a bodyshop to get it fixed.
I'm pretty pessimistic at this point since 1) he probably noticed he hit my car when pulling out, and didn't fess up since he figured EVERY car in boston has scuff marks on all four corners (but no broken taillights, which he might not have noticed he inflicted) or 2) He DID NOT notice himself scuffing my car and when I confront him about it he will get all defensive and deny everything.
I talked to the parking lot owner and there are no cameras anywhere and the parking lot owner told me that trying to get a hold of this "sketchy" guy is hard, and that the owner has his own issues with this guy.
Fast forward to sunday late afternoon, the truck is back and I investigate it for paint on his bumper. I see some black scuff marks on the plastic of his front bumper but his whole truck looks like he uses it in a boston destruction derby.
Anyway, I guess I'm screwed because there is no video evidence of him actually hitting my car so it's his word against mine. He can just say that I planted the plastic taillight pieces on the ground to try to get him to fix damages inflicted by another car. I just dont have the time to chase this case around because I have a career I have to complete. Just sucks since I KNOW all the blemishes on my car and I'm 99.5% sure that this guy did it.
Heck I'd even be willing to fix it myself without insurance knowing it if only I could get the guy to fess up. Apparently he doesn't even live around there, he just parks his car there since his mother owns a house near there. The parking lot guy doesn't want anything to do with this because he is a lazy bum.
So now I have to get a new 04 taillight or just go back to my 03 stocks. And the paint is a whole other issue. UGH. I guess this is why they call them m*******s.
I really don't think there is any way I can get him to assume responsibility for it.
Cliffs: park my car in assigned parking space.
next day, paint is chipped and taillight broken
car next to mine has all evidence of being the culprit
chasing guy down will not be worth my time since no hard evidence he did it.

not worth it to tell insurance, they will charge more in raised premiums and deductible than it will cost to fix touch up paint, 2000 grit sand paper, and new tail light and ull be good, 200 bucks maybe versus the other costs that insurance will charge u

not in the form of a diy, just get a can of touchup, brush it on, wetsand with 2000 grit til its smoothe, clear coat, wet sand again, then buff... it sounds easy, it is, but its time consuming

tell the cops you saw him do it. and fyi, he prolly did not even feel it when his truck hit you. my friend in a regular car scraped someones bumper getting out of a tight spot and we didnt even notice til we got back home and saw the blue paint on the side.

I'm starting to think insurance companies on either side of the border differ from all the posts I'm reading from you southerners. Up here you don't have to do ****, just tell the insurance company, they'll contact his insurance company and you don't pay anything. And your premiums won't go up since the other insurance company is paying. Is it different there? I also have Hit And Run coverage where I can claim someone else hitting me, even if I have no idea who it was, my insurance company pays for all of it and I don't get charged a thing, not even a deductible. And my rates don't increase.
But that might also have something to do with the fact that personal liability in the USA covers about $25,000 and in Canada it covers at minimum $1,000,000. Much less lawsuits.
So what I'm trying to say is call your insurance company and see what they tell you.
