can an off duty police officer write a ticket?
can an off duty police officer write a ticket?
on my way to work this morning i was running late and passed an off duty cop. he gets on my a$$ and i few minutes later hit his lights and pulls me over. when he gets out he is in a windbreaker and he was driving the opposite direction of the police station (the police station is on the other end of town). i knew he was off duty. then he says he is going to write me a ticket for 75 in a 60. (he has to get his ticket pad out of his trunk!!) make a long story short i tell him that i'm in school and that i pay my on bills and can't afford a ticket on my insurance. he lets me go with a verbal warning. with that said can an off duty cop write a ticket? i mean the guy is using the car as a personal vehicle and using tax payer dollars to drive himself around.

good question, I'd think someone who is on duty would have to do it, but thats just what I think..
maybe the question is, should he? - anything is possible.

was he uniformed and in the police vehicle?
i am not too sure on this, but i think it would be thrown out of the courts if the judge or court figured out the officer was off-duty at the time the ticket was issued. the police academy tells you that you are NOT a police officer when off duty and not on parole. even if you see a crime being commited, you are still a citizen and will received the treatment as one if anything happens.
either way, respect all officers [people] and be glad you weren't cited and had to go thru so much hassle

^Agreed.
I'm not too sure, and the courts might throw it out if you took it that far. That being said, the cop is more likely (if he is off duty) to give you a warning.
So if you are cooperative, you should get off easily.

cops are never off duty, they have the right to arrest anyone at anytime, yea its better to do what they did than sit around in parking lots and talk to each other like they do around me all night. Every night i see like 4 cop cars lined up in a row talking to each other while i go speeding past them
It varies from place to place but generally off duty police are still responsible for up holding the law. Mos areas require that officers carry a firearm at all tiems as well.
Yesturday this girl I went to Highschool with and this other guy that is a few years older were shooting up heroin at a pump at the local gas station, when an off duty police officer pulled up and cought them. It turned out to be her father and arrested both of them on the spot. Can you imagine that ****, arrested by your dad?

One of my friends got arrested by an officer that was off-duty, not in uniform, and who never stated that he was police, gave him warning, or said that he was arresting him. The man just grabbed my (slightly drunk) friend by the shirt, then when my friend tried to push the stranger's arm away, BAM, thrown on the ground, beat in the face with a club, then cuffed and hauled in. Wasn't told he was being arrested or charged until he was in jail. Charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Got his face stitched up two days later.
The moral of the story is: police officers are "on duty" whenever they want to be. Oh yeah, and don't mess with the H-town Po-Po.

My Private college 'security' can issue tickets and then just charge them into tuition.
The other Private college have full blown police officers, K-9's and all. They can only issue tickets on school grounds, and off campus to people who commited offenses on campus
I dont think public schools can do **** though; that would have to go through the local PD.
the local highschool district in my town is the local police force. When they first changed over there were police chases all the time. Because no one thought they had power. It was so funny you would get a ticket and a report card with the same logo. They have every right that every other cop has.
