Got Hit! Anything I should do so I won't get screwed?
Some ghetto fabulous guys in a minivan rear-ended me today, and in a panic, they ran off. I did the following:
Got their plates, immediately called the police and my insurance company to give them the description.
When a deputy arrived about an hour later (WTF), I filed a police report with him and he ran the plate # I have him. The plate matches the description of the van that I gave him also.
I gave the police report information to my insurance company. The van looks fairly new (late 90s or early 2000s, so it should be insured).
I am going to the adjuster on Friday, and was wondering if there is anything else I need to do to get what I need from those ******. I have to have my insurance cut me a check up front while they "investigate" the case.
Also, if the adjuster gives me an estimate I don't like, am I entitled to a second opinion of my choice? This is in Texas, BTW.
Damage to my car:
Trunk lid bent/paint damage and trunk doesn't close properly
Rear bumper and cover knocked loose and needs to be replaced
Rear lip (OEM) maybe some paint damage at the worst
Exhaust knocked loose (wow more HP, I think I'll keep it
)
Rear quarter panel has a crease in it

i'd say take it to honda and have them give you an itemized list of what it would cost and find thier labor. remember to tell them its for your insurance company because they charge them diffrently. and hond charges like $115 an hour or something as compared to probably like $60 an hour the insurance company gave you.
your insurance company will pay the shop thats repairing the damages, and your insurance company will be suing or recieving that money from the van's insurance company.
regardless, your car WILL get fixed. you need to find a shop so you can send the bill estimate to your insurance company or whomever is paying for it. preferably, goto HONDA themselves as they are most expsensive and gauranteed OEM parts. or you can have insurance company inspect it and have them write a check based on the inspectors judgement. you should also provide the insurance company inspector the bill estimate of the damages to give him a ball park figure amount. if he writes you a check that you think isnt reasonable, tell him/her "then how am i going to come up with $xxxx to pay for the car to be repair?"
goodluck. more likely, the van driver can be seeing jail time as hit n run is a felony? btw, you filed a police report yet? request the van drivers info from the officer as well.

update: found 'em. the kid has no license, but his dad has insurance. the law office will get back with me on monday for more details. i got an estimate from an insurance adjuster, but that's going down the toilet since i'm gonna want NEW parts, not RECONDITIONED crap.
there's some serious problems with my poor car, though.

good luck. the adjuster just gives a ROUGH estimate. You take it to the shop of YOUR choice, and they fix it. Any extra cost that the check doesn't cover, the shop collects from the paying insurance. I'm assuming their insurance is paying everything. Are you hurt or in pain? Goto a doctor to make sure, and send the bill to insurance as well.
Make sure if they are paying you loss of use you get in writing what was agreed i didn't get it in writing and i am getting fvcked over because of that now they are saying they never said that.
