that sort of sucks, but I doubt they would know the difference. Are they gonna know the codes of every engine? I would think a k20a_ would be fine or a K24. JMO, I wouldnt go to a different gen car, since they are about the same from those years.

Around here you drive up to the inspection place, give them $12.50 to check the lights, signals, seatbelts, brakes, and wipers, then drive off with your sticker. I doubt they'd even notice a swap. I don't know how it is in the big cities, though. If I have time, I'll find the actual TX vehicle code about swaps and post it here.

basically before going through with a swap make sure the motor is legit. a whole lot of them are not around our area. a friend of mine knows one of the biggest non legit guys in the area...so if you are swapping just get papers on the motor or atleast make sure it isnt stolen or you will most likely end up going down

I couldn't find anything specific to engine swaps, but my best guess is that (1) the vehicle would have to pass emissions testing if there is any, and (2) you need to have legal proof that your new engine wasn't obtained illegally. I'm pretty sure that no one would care if you swapped an older engine or a bigger 4-banger into a Civic, but they might say something about shoehorning six or eight cylinders in there. But, again, I've never swapped an engine or have any friends who have, so I don't know for sure all the legal hoops you'd have to jump through. Maybe there's a 7thgen member from Texas who has swapped and would be able to give a more deninitive answer.

Here's the link to TX transportation codes is you want to look through them:
