its legal to have clear bulbs if you have a orange reflector. If you have a 04 civic then it has the orange reflector already built into the headlight, so you can replace the amber bulbs with clear ones. Thats why i did for my 04 and it made it look really clear. I've driven past two cops since then and have not gotten pulled over.

yeah. i was planning on taking that out and spraying a few coats of chrome or aluminum paint on it, to clear my headlights.
i was originally thinking of getting some of those new silverstar bulbs that are clear coated but glow amber. but i changed my mind and i really just dont like orange at all. looks strange with my hyper whites/blues. so i think im going to get some clear bulbs.
i probably wont paint my orange reflector piece for a while. so if i get clear bulbs the reflector will still have orange on it for the time being, n i guess that will be llegal. i just hope i dont get pulled over n get tickets later for having no orange reflector in my headlights, and no actual bulb that gloes orange.
thanks for the help temjin n others

np man...you can pick up clear bulbs at autozone or kragens. its like $3. The clear bulbs are going to give off a yellowish glow. At night the yellow will reflect off the orange reflector and give a sorta light orange or more of a gold type of color. Your allowed to have white or amber turn signals so there's nothing illegal about it. The sylvania box i bought even said they were oem spec bulbs and dot compliant. If you get pulled over by a cop you can show them the box. You don't even have to switch them out for court because there legal bulbs.
I would also suggest against painting the orange reflector. The orange reflector in 04's are really small and barely noticeable. If you look at the front of your car directly you won't even see the reflector when you clear the bulbs. You only see the reflector if you look at the car from an angle or the side. I dont think its really worth the time to take the headlights out and open them up just to paint a small stripe of orange. Later on your going to have to get rid of the paint or replace the stripes with orange ones again when you sell the car.
good luck man

hey temjin, u wouldnt happen to know what section that is under in the vehicle code would ya?
btw thanks again. good to know
i was talking to my friend who has white bulbs for hsi turn signals. he says there pretty dim during the day, and u cant even notice them. its the same with the stock orange ones, but during the day u can see them slightly better. anyone know of a brand that sells turn signal bulbs that are like blinding white, bright enough to shine during the day?

Here's the site that should answer your legality questions for california. Its a repost but should give you the info you need. http://www.chp.ca.gov/html/streetlegal.html
Parking lights and turn signals aren't designed to really project light that far like your low beams. If you want really bright white light just find any bulbs that have the blue filament on the outside of the bulb.

if you dont do stupid **** then the cops wont bother you. i had jdm headlights for my accord and the corners were white and i had no bumper lights so there want any amber at all. cops never bothered me. but i agree with temjin... no need to go through all the trouble to remove a dinky reflector. leave it as is and change the bulb if you want.
