i got a citation for having what a cop called a "fart pipe" i have an aftermarket 3" muffler tailpipe in my civic and i was just pulled over now, after i got back from walmart. he says its "noise pollution" and in the ticket it said "muffler too loud" and i really wasnt accelerating hard at all. he says exhausts that dont look stock will be pulled over by all cops now. does lakeland, fl have a law against aftermarket mufflers? well, i told the cop i got the car like this and he still is gonna wave the 50 dollar fine in my face till i can get a stock muffler. wtf is the ****? can i ask for you advice injenguru? i know youre a nice cop here, but i have to say i cant respect the opinion of the cop who pulled me over. btw he wants me to fix it and install the stock muffler back when i got NO STOCK MUFFLER.

i measured mine with a db meter from radioshack and mine is 91 @ 1-20 feet. after 20 feet its 90 db. so whats the bs about this cop in lakeland, florida. they are nuts. lpd and fla state troopers suck, but not the sheriffs. they are nicer.
damn, that sucks man. Im just wondering though, if our cars get cited for its "noise" polition, shouldnt those big a$$ harely davidson bikes get cited too? I've never ever herd, any car louder than those things, they are really fcukin LOUD. Yet, they ride in groups, and I dont ever recall a biker getting cited for their "fart pipes".

According to Florida Law
316.272 Exhaust systems, prevention of noise.--
(1) Every motor vehicle shall at all times be equipped with an exhaust system in good working order and in constant operation, including muffler, manifold pipe, and tailpiping to prevent excessive or unusual noise. In no event shall an exhaust system allow noise at a level which exceeds a maximum decibel level to be established by regulation of the Department of Environmental Protection as provided in s. 403.061(13) in cooperation with the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. No person shall use a muffler cutout, bypass or similar device upon a vehicle on a highway.
(2) The engine and power mechanism of every motor vehicle shall be so equipped and adjusted as to prevent the escape of excessive fumes or smoke.
(3) A violation of this section is a noncriminal traffic infraction, punishable as a nonmoving violation as provided in chapter 318.

I'm glad mine is just slightly louder that stock. But that's messed up about it being too loud. I've heard older cars with a much louder stock exhaust tone.

My point: you might be able to contest this via a real lawyer.
lease:Edit: an aftermarket exhaust is still quieting the engine--we all know how loud the engine is without the muffler!

Here is 403.061
(13) Require persons engaged in operations which may result in pollution to file reports which may contain information relating to locations, size of outlet, height of outlet, rate and period of emission, and composition and concentration of effluent and such other information as the department shall prescribe to be filed relative to pollution.
(I dont see anything about db levels though)

nice find, az2k1civic. how did you find the FL laws? do you use westlaw?
Anyway, unless there is info on decibel levels in paragraphs other than 13, this seems easy to get around. For one thing, the law seems to equate decibel level with pollution, which I think is incorrect. Don't most aftermarket exhaust systems meet pollution laws? If you passed your last inspection w/the exhaust, the ticket is bogus because you meet all requirements in 316.272 AND 403.061(13).
that's my reading of it. a florida lawyer could tell better.
