Ottawa's Income tax thread
Ok well I did a search in the Ottawa forum and I couldn't find any relavent threads, so I made one. Does anyone have someone they go to religiously for income taxes? Reason I am asking is that Sheena and myself might have to file as comon law this year, and I want to sit down and talk to someone about the whole issue.
We both would like to stay away from H&R Block, they're just after your money. We are willing to pay a reasonable price for someone to do our taxes for us, but we'd like to meet them first. I have someone I can call, but I haven't talked to the guy in years. I doubt hell remember me.
Any help is appreciated, as we would like to have our taxes completed within the next 2 weeks.

Don't be afraid...it's not all that complicated. I'm sure if you take your time over the next two weeks, you can do it yourself.

that's a free website for doing your taxes. just take your time...I'm sure you'll do fine.

Filing as common law will not have very big impact on your tax situation. Your incomes will be combined for the determination of the provincial sales tax, property tax and rent credit. They will also be combined for determining the GST rebate. But these things are quite small in terms of $$. Certain things can also be shared when you file common law, such as donations, medical expenses and tuition credits can be transferred between yourseves.
you never have to file common law if you dont want Jess and I are married and we file separate we do your taxes separte and then togather and what ever one gets us more it is what we go with
Yes but once you claim married or common law you have to do it every year that your together. Julian and I have never claimed common law. No real benifit. You make over a certain amount and you will no longer get gst. Eric I do our taxes every year. Depending on how complicated they are you can do it your self. Do you have RRSP or investments. if not why not do it yourself. I did our taxes last year by hand and it took me no time really. everyother year and this year I bought the computer programe. You then can file it on-line which is safe to do. We got our refund within a week. Quick tax is about $40 and e-file is about $20. I usually buy Quick tax but tried out e-file. Both pretty easy. Give me a call or email me and I can help you out. Don't spend the extra money to get someone to do your taxes if you dont have to. I wont do them for you but I can help.

I only ever have my T4...so doing taxes takes 5 minutes tops. It sucks having to go through all the useless forms that i never fill out...this snap tax sounds like it could shave my tax time down to 2 minutes

Holly $hit guys, I wasn't expecting this many replies! Thanks for the input! Soo many options out there to choose from. Caryn, yeah My dad helped me that past couple of years by hand, but it's alot of math, and I'm not good at that. I was going to go quick tax, but then the wh ole common law thing came up. I don't want to get nailed later on down the road. But I just realized. How will Revenue Canada find out that we are a couple just by an address? We could be room mates
Jim, I will check out that free tax program, Rob, thank you for the offer, but I think it would just be simpilar if we purchased our own copy (If thats the rout we go) Jer, yeah man I forgot your were an accountant. Thanks for the input!

Thanks for the input! If you don't wanna go through the hassle of doing taxes then check with Aram from Industrial Alliance (613-744-8255) he does most of the taxes for my dad and is very reasonbably priced. He also does my RRSP's and mutual funds. He is really nice and he always explains everything to you so you understand what is going on.
