Advice: adding keyless entry?
Damn, newbie action .. I failed at posting this once and who knows.. I'll likely end up with a double posting now.
Well, I'm still working my way through the first 1000's kms on my new '04 Civic. I got the 'special edition' which is basically a DX + a/c and power locks.
I'd really like to add keyless entry. It seems aftermarket shops in the area want $200 or so to do it, and I'm not really keen on having them hack up my wiring (I've seen too many hack jobs stereo installs thanks).
Going the OEM route is going to be expensive (but I honestly haven't priced it yet). However, I got to thinking.. maybe I can scavenge the OEM keyless module from a wreck, pick up some remotes from ebay and go the DIY route. Or is this a stupid idea?
So, anyone know which model years electronics will match the '04? (and have keyless entry of course) Any hints on junkyards to check on? I'd also really like to get the Si leather wrapped steering wheel, shift boot & ****.
Who's the local electronics whiz?

ok, first off, welcome to the site DooD! Finally a 2k4! you're the first one on the site from Ottawa... atleast the first one who's posted in the ottawa forum!
anyways, back on topic. I've never heard of this being done, and i'd expect it to be a hell of a job, but as fas as electronics goes, i'm assuming you'd be able to use most parts off of 2001 to 2004 civics, they're all pretty much similar and not much changed for the 2004 except the lights and bumber i believe. If you're looking for junkyards though, Arnprior is supposed to have a pretty good one, here's the link to it
A&O Parts
as far as how to do it goes, i doubt you'd be able to find someone in the Ottawa forum who'd be able to guide you through this, so you should check in the "tech stuff" and "I.C.E. & Electrical" forums in the General section. You might find someone who's actually done this in those sections. But just so you know, if you manage to get your hands on a DIY, i and i'm sure other people in ottawa would be more than happy to lend a helping hand!

Hey there, I have no idea what I'm doing in the Ottawa forum. But welcome! The keyless entry OEM stuff can be DIY'd if you can find a wrecked 01-04 Civic, EL, RSX, or SiR. But you're hacking up the wiring anyhoo, so you may as well get an alarm system and have that put in instead. OEM electronics can be pricey, even from a junker, so getting a Compustar/Clifford/Viper isn't that far off, and then you'll have an alarm with shock sensor, fancy-schmantzy remote, autostart (if you so choose), and it can be set to go off to warn you of those dangerous breezes and leaves.
Thanks for the warm welcome guys (and gals).
From looking at http://www.handa-accessories.com/civic/02civkeyless.pdf it does appear that the OEM part isn't a big deal to install -- but there are 2 problems.
1. They only ship to the USA (I could reroute via a friend I suppose)
2. There is a comment "For HX only on 2004 Model" which concerns me.
For $120USD I don't really want to gamble.
From calling around, it sounded like the aftermarket shops wanted significantly more than $200 for an alarm install w/ keyless entry. How much should I expect to pay for a reasonable alarm system locally?
I don't know about older versions of the civic, but mine has this funky encoded key that locks out the fuel pump. So no key, no go. Seems like they may have solved the honda theft problem to me. I'm not sure I need an alarm.

Yeah all 7thgen civics have the immobilizer built into the key.
I don't see an aftermarket alarm costing much more than $300 installed. For a two-way (aka "pager") alarm, $500-600 installed for a decent one.

the problem isn't always someone taking off with your car... it's someone taking off with your car parts. That's what you really want to protect, your expensive mods! And since the 7th gen civics are some of the easiest civics to break into, you might want to think of getting an alarm.
installin aftermarket keyless entry is super easy, it wont fk up your wiring harness cause you just need to pin some wires in and that's it. it gets difficult when you get to remete start but if you are just looking at keyless entry it wont cost alot.
there are some good aftermarket alarm systems in www.asianwolf.com or try Ebay

Just goto Futureshop, get a basic alarm installed for 200 bucks, will do the same job as keyless entry plus a wee bit extra security.
And isnt the american HX the SIR here ? so i dont think it will fit,
u shiould goto honda and ask them for the part number

Bummer. I checked out the OEM system @ Ottawa Honda today.
Part #08E60-S5D-300 -> $284.26
I know I can get an easy 10% off parts (got a coupon when I bought my car), but its still 10x the cost of a keyless system from eBay. Oh yeah, and they wanted 1hr @ $80 to install it (over my dead body).
Then I called up Dow Honda, since they are supposed to be tops in customer service. The parts guy told me there is no keyless system for the special edition -- I had to get the alarm system at $700+, that was a short conversation.
http://www.handa-accessories.com/civelec01.html has a very similar part #08E60-S5D-100 listed for $120USD.
Anyone have a recent 7th gen that they've put an aftermarket alarm in and are no longer using the stock keyless? I'd be really interested in seeing if I could scavenge your keyless and install it in my car (of course I'd be willing to pay you a reasonable price if it worked).

Well, I started up a thread in the general electrical section..
http://www.7thgencivic.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=161940
There is actually some useful information in that thread. Here's how it all worked out for me.
I emailed and called a bunch of the dealers in town, and some out of town. I got two types of answers.
1) You need part #08E60-S5D-300 ~$300
2) You need to buy a whole OEM alarm system ~$700+
Most of the dealers/parts people just blew me off. Here's your answer, cough up the cash or go away. Oh yeah, and you'll probably want us to install it.
I also checked with some of the US dealers to see if the part #08E60-S5D-100 is the same part or not. Mostly I got completely useless answers from that area.
Then I got lucky.
Denis Pilon from Hunt Club Honda got back to me in email and said that they had part #08E60-S5D-300 in stock and gave me a price that was totally amazing (can you say better than 50% off?).
I was floored. No way, must be a mistake. So I called him and left a message to get back to me. After lunch he gave me a call. He said that they'd had the part in stock for a while and wanted to clear it out -- not a popular part apparently. BUT he checks which car I'm putting it in, and says.. oh, the part #08E60-S5D-300 is a 2003 part - doesn't show up in the 2004 listing in the computer. He goes away and digs around, comes back after a bit and says that he thinks I need the full alarm system.
The convesation didn't end there, since he is actually taking the time to explain how and why he thinks this. We go around a bit of a circle, but its pretty informative -- I point out that the honda website http://www.honda.ca/Personalise/Hond...336699&yr=2004 has keyless entry as an option and alarm as an option -- so it should be possible to buy just the part for keyless. So he says to hang on again.
I hold for a long time, he comes back 2 times to say that he's still checking around and thanks for being patient.
He finally gets back and tells me this. There is a fairly recent Honda bulletin (last few weeks) that indicates that this 2003 part will work fine in the 2004 cars. The other good news is he says he's going to honor the cheap price he quoted me
So, I zipped down there to pick up my wicked deal. I have the parts, now all I need to do is install it.
So, my guess based on the fact that the part number 08E60-S5D-300 is a 2003 part, I'd bet that the US part 08E60-S5D-100 is simply a 2001 part. For one reason or the other, the keyless system didn't come to Canada before 2003? (maybe 2001, 2002 didn't have a car with powerlocks but no keyless?)
If you check the thread I started in the ICE section you'll notice that someone in the states does have an OEM keyless system for sale for $80USD -- which isn't a bad deal (but my deal worked out cheaper!)
Moral of the story (if anyone is still reading this friggin monster of a posting).. Do lots of research into what you are buying. Don't be afraid to ask around for information, but don't just believe everything the parts counter tells you -- if what they say doesn't make sense, its probably not 100% true.
Oh yeah, and Denis Pilon from Hunt Club Honda rocks.
He was very helpful, and worked to figure out the right answer.. not just the easy one.
I'll probably update this thread with install information once I get it in and going. I might even get motivated and take pictures of the install.

thats a pretty good deal, under 80 USD is not bad. and yes i deal only with hunt club, they r nice guys there.
the problem with honda is that they rename all there parts every year, and they even call the same part diffrent names if its going on a coupe or sedan, making it almost impossible for the people working at honda to figure out what works on what. So the way to do it is to find out your self, or to find someone like denis, that is prepared to find out for you.
so how r u gonna install this thing ? will u do it manually ?
and i have a 2002, and it came with keyless entry, but its an LX.

Roo, man if I was you, I'd send in a letter (maybe even the one you just wrote here in this thread, and submit it to all the other hondas, show them that they are all a bunch of bumbs!
I have only dealt with Ottawa Honda on Richmond Rd. But I'm SERIOUSLY thinking of going to a different location. Hunt Club Honda is alot closer to me than Richmond Rd is, and by the sounds of it, the people are alot less "trashy" sounding than what you would find at alot of dealerships. I'm sick of walking to the service counter and having them trying to throw all this service bullcrap at me... (most of which I don't need) and which also costs upwards of $300. I'm sorry, but last time I checked.... money didn't grow on trees. Abe, you deal with Hunt Club, what are the people at the service dept like there??

Well, its in. Probably about and hour and half -- and I took my time.
The kit didn't come with installation instructions. However, I expected this and had printed out the installation instructions http://www.cheaphondaparts.com/shop/...s/aii24178.pdf for the US part. Pretty much identical. (again more evidence that the US part number would just work fine)
The only difference was the step 7 "remove the dashboard center lower cover" which in the instructions says just pull it out.. and on my car there were 2 screws to take out before you could just pull it out.
They talk about programming the ECM/PCM..
I'm not sure I did this correctly, but my car seems to idle properly. Anyone with stereo install experience know much about this? Apparently any time you disconnect the battery you need to do this.
Of course I had that "damn, I screwed it up" moment when I was programming the remotes. I'm sitting there thinking.. why did I put the whole car back together BEFORE trying the remotes? Duh. I do this all the time with my computer too.. its all back together.. then I have to take it all apart. Turns out that you can't make use of the remote if the key is in the ignition. (of course) So I had done the programming and just left the key in the ignition and was trying to lock/unlock with no success. Duh again.
I'm really happy with it. The remotes are pretty nice looking (real honda remotes). No extra buttons that don't do anything (just 3 buttons, lock, unlock and panic). I didn't cut or splice a single wire -- everything just plugged in. One press unlocks the drivers side, two presses unlock all doors. One press to lock all doors, two to get the 'honk'.
So there you have it. My first mod! Am I cool yet?

27. Do the ECM/PCM idle learn procedure.
Make sure all electrical items are turned off.
Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at
3,000 rpm with no load (in Park or Neutral) until
the radiator fan comes on.
Let the engine idle for about 5 minutes with the
throttle fully closed and with all electrical items
off.
NOTE: If the radiator fan comes on during this
step, the time it is operating must not be
included in the 5 minutes.
