you should have posted this in the computers forum or something, i think this forum is for "i want to buy this, do you have it for sale" or something like that, but i'll help you out
first off, find out how many megapixels you want. i have a 3.2MP, i think thats sufficient for most people. if you are just looking for a camera that will take small pictures (800x600 or 1024x768), something suitable for emails or webpages and such, then maybe a 2.0MP will be enough. if you need large pics, for making banners or posters, then you might want to consider 5.0MP. but really, 3.2 is about average.
next, look at the optical zoom, disregard DIGITAL ZOOM. optical zoom is better of the two, its zoom provided by the lens, unlike digital zoom, which is done by software. for example, open up a pic on your computer, and start to zoom in, 150%, then 200%, then 400%, notice its getting uglier? thats why you dont look at the digital zoom, it does nothing. on average, 3x is about how much optical zoom you'll find in a digicam (decently priced), expensive ones have more, cheaper ones have less. more is better.
if movies matters, look into that. some cameras dont take video clips, others do, but with no sound, or like mine, they limit the length of the video, like 30 seconds a clip. it wasn't a big thing for me, i wanted a camera for pictures, not video, but it is available, so you might want to look into it further.
media, what kind of storage does the camera have? most likely, the camera will take some kind of storage media, like a smart media card, or a secure digital, maybe a memory stick, or compact flash. there are about 8 different types out there i believe. lets look at it this way? do you have a PDA that takes storage cards? what about a camcorder or portable mp3 player? if so, what kind is it? you might want to buy a camera that takes media thats the same as the media used in other devices you have, so you are not wasting more money on different cards and readers and whatever.
those are the main things i looked at when i bought mine, its an olympus stylus digital 300, its a really small camera, with nice features, i recommend it brand wise. other great camera cameras imho are sony and canon.
