Let's Talk Pressure Plates

I've read in a magazine and heard from certain places, that the XTreme pressure plate is more than a daily driven boosted (~7-8psi) Civic needs. Also, the Xtreme pressure plate would be good if you plan on racing your car more than it being a daily driver. I was told to go with the Heavy Duty disk to allow some slipping so engagement isn't as harsh as it would be on the XT, and to keep the tires from spinning out... basically: Using a clutch that will closely act and feel like stock, while handeling a higher output than stock. I'm waiting for ACT to get back to me to let me know which pressure plate is better for a daily driver. But in the meantime... anybody have any input on this?

I don't have input but I would like to know if you're installing it yourself and if you are, are you gonna do a DIY
I don't have a turbo but my stock clutch slips pretty bad when I shift from 2nd to 3rd over 5k rpm so I wanna change something, either the pressure plate or the clutch disk or both.

i decided to go with their Clutch Kit Number: HC5-HDOO setup. I believe that it is a heavy duty pressure plate, and a street disc. It can handle 223 ft/lbs of torque, and the pedal is only 50% stiffer. I do want to keep the stock feeling, but i dont want it to slip so much that it glazes over like in my CRX.

Also i hear that they have a lightened flywheel for our cars. I went into their offices and they said that is was for up to 2001. The manager said that it may fit a 2002, but he isnt sure because he thinks that they may have changed something on the flywheel from 01 - 02 that would make them different. Does anyone have an answer for that?

I dont know a lot of shops for whatever reason confused the 2001 civic as a 6th gen, for whatever reason. It boggles my mind how they could not know something like that assuming they sold a product.

Yeah, HC5-HDOO is what the shop told me to put in. I also read that it's a good combination for street/race, while the Xtreme is better for race but a little harsher than you'd want for street. It's the Heavy Duty w/ stock street plate.

The shop is installing the clutch so no DIY. I want the work warranted and changing out a pressure plate and disk is not the easiest thing to do.

I just got an e-mail from ACT telling me that the Heavy Duty pressure plate and the performance organic street disk would be the best for street and strip. They said the stock street disk can't hold up as well to Turbo or a even a 50 shot. So the part number would be:

HC5-HDSS

If you didn't know, we get a discount at Ptuning.com The difference between the two of them there shipped is only like $10. With the Organic Street disk and HD pressure plate package, the final price is $350 shipped. I've done business with them a few times (intake, gauges, pod), they are good people.

I have an old issue of Drag Sport here though that explains all about clutches. The organic disk has a higher coefficient of friction than the stock street disk. And while both the ACT handle the same torque rating... the SS (organic) will handle it better with more durability than the OO (stock street). So that's the difference.

Got the ACT heavy duty pressure plate and organic disk installed today. WOW! It makes a huge difference. I still have to break it in, so obviously it's going to be a little different than it is now, but so far I put 50 miles on it. No more waiting for the power to hit the wheels, this thing grabs early. I'm already use to it, but it took some getting used to. Shifting and everything is super solid. I haven't gone above 4000rpm with it yet, and won't until 200-300 miles, so next week I'll see how it does with launching and ****. And then in two weeks, we'll see how it does under boost.

Yeah, I wish I did. Transmission work is always expensive though. On the new civics, they have to remove the subframe. But I actually payed less than I did on my old car.

Just as a little update... I put 200 city miles on it so far. I thought it'd be a good time to take it to redline. You can tell it works already down low, but up top I can feel an actual difference from the stock clutch. Maybe it's just me and it really isn't happening lol, but it makes it seem as if the stock clutch used to slip a little in the high end (my stock clutch was in perfect condition w/ only 10,000 on it. But with this cluctch, it feels like it's got a firm grip on the top end (like it should, that's what it's for), and delivers power smoother. Whatever... more to come
