Question Copper Headgaskets

Is anybody interested in these? I'm talking to a few companies about getting one made. The only thing is that if you want one custom made, sometimes you have to pay a setup fee for the CAD and machinary. If a bunch of us were gonna get one, we could split up the fee, or maybe if enough of us got one, they could get rid of the fee. They are on average about $65-75 per gasket.

I talked to one company, they said if I bought 5 headgaskets, they could make prices work for us... I think they meant no setup fee.

Copper gasket? Hmm would the better sealing offset the higher heat transfer to the incoming air? (copper conducts heat better)
It may be worth it, if the gasket is thinner than stock (raising compression), but i'm not sure. Anyone got a dyno on another car w/ a copper gasket?

I see what you are saying... this isn't something you would just do on any engine. Forced induction engines and high output engines benefit though.

Along with the better sealing and all... you actually want the copper to be conductive. It will coduct the heat from the cylinders and surrounding area, keeping them cooler. It helps prevent detonation.

You can get them in a variety of thicknesses too.

Here's the deal from one company:
Setup CAD/Pattern Fee: $100
Copper Gasket (depending on thickness): $85 per
If we buy 5 gaskets, he will waive the $100 setup fee.
MATERIAL THICKNESS .022,.032,.040,.043,.048, .054,.063,.070, .086, .093, and .125 inches.

I was talking to someone today that blew their headgasket on a Cavalier. She said the place quoted her for 7 hours of labor to remove the head and replace the gasket. First off, is that really how long it takes? If so, I guess it would be better to do all of the internals at once. Any ideas?

7 hrs. HE!! no. I would say max 4 hrs to take off and put on a head. I had a Cavalier on it and after 185,000 miles the head gasket went. So I went to get an estimate and they said 6 hrs work. That was too much for me and I thought I could do it my self.

I went home got a buddy of mine to help me. I also sent the head to be shaved a 1/10". Took us 1.5 hrs to take it off and about 2 to put it back.

More than this engine could ever handle... they use these on all out race cars.

EDIT: I'd plan on doing other internals at the same time so you don't waste time.

I'll keep everyone updated. Give me a few weeks though. I only have money for my turbo installation right now, and finals are almost over so I'll be going back to work full time to make some more. But, I'm also going to talk to some other companies and see what they say. See if I can get a lower price. But $85 is still ok.

I think I'm in. Are there any other options for head gaskets though? If not, then I'm in.

I disagree with the full copper idea.... You'll have some problems in high boost applications...

Head gasket jobs on our cars are pretty straight forward. 4 hours seems low, 7 hours seems more reasonable. It's not a small job though and care needs to be taken....

Finally, I would suggest ARP Head Studs while you have the head off.... It will help even sealing...

I can't see a reason why there would be any problems with copper. It won't blow out, even at high pressure.

I'm basically asking if there are any aftermarket headgaskets out for our cars. Well, besides replicas of the OEM ones.
