My research says that it needs rings, that honda knows about the problem with 01 to 05's but not enough for recall. No leaks, no smoke, oil coming out the tail pipe. I know I can pick up a 45,000 to 50,000 motor( $850.00), but the shops I have spoke to won't put it in. I would just like to find a honda backyard guru here in Vancouver Wa. that would rebuild the bottom half or do what my 1.7 v needs without costing more than what the car is worth. Help!!!!

I'm curious, how much oil do you actually use, how many miles are on your engine and what makes you think it is the rings?

The most common ways for an engine to burn oil is past the rings or past the valve guides and both show up in the exhaust. If you are "going thru more oil than gas" I would expect you would see it on the plugs or in the exhaust.

I also wonder about your statement that that rings are a known problem for 01 to 05 Civics. Only a few people on this forum have had a problem with rings and if I remember correctly, in most cases it was abuse or neglect.

i dont agree with that, i barely burn any oil at all in my 05 civic,

i dont have to add any oil between oil changes,

i change my oil every 6,000-8,000 KM

when i change it i fill it to the full line on the dipstick, when im due to change it again, its at about the 3/4 mark on the dipstick,

250,000 KM on it now

Definitely not a well known problem with 01-05s. I've gone 20000 kms between oil changes and only topped up a quart that whole time. (NOT recommended lol)

Most reputable shops will only install parts they supply.


Recall? How is oil consumption a safety issue?
